"Hijralekt" -Language and negotiating the position and role of the third sex (hijra) in the Hindu community

Celem niniejszej pracy była charakterystyka grupy społecznej hidżra pod względem kulturowym oraz językowym. Szczegółowo opisany został specyficzny język, który służy hidżrom do negocjowania pozycji i roli trzeciej płci w hinduskiej społeczności. W rozdziale pierwszym opisano i przeanalizowano między innymi problem jakim jest różnica pomiędzy płcią biologiczną a kulturową. Opisane teorie badaczy pokazały jak ogromna jest rozbieżność między tymi dwoma pojęciami. W rozdziale tym poruszono również problemy z jakimi zmagają się osoby, które nie mieszczą się w binarnym podziale płci. Rozdział drugi to charakterystyka grupy hidżr pod względem kulturowym a także analiza przynależności religijnej hidżr. Zawarto w nim próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie kim są hidżry. Rozdział trzeci w całości skupiony jest na analizie specyficznego języka hidżr. Język jest jednym z najistotniejszych elementów w procesie socjalizacji hidżr. Hidżry za pomocą mowy są w stanie przejąć językową kontrolę nad rozmówcą. Opisany został sposób ‘upłciowienia’ przez hidżry ich języka, charakterystyczny ‘hidżralekt’ oraz sposób negocjacji własnej pozycji społecznej, poprzez stosowanie mowy kobiecej oraz męskiej a także wulgaryzmów.

The purpose of this thesis was to characterize the hijra social group in terms of culture and language. The language used by hijras to negotiate the position and role of the third gender in the Hindu community has been described in detail. The first chapter describes and analyzes the problem of the difference between biological and cultural sex. Described theories of researchers showed how important is the difference between the two concepts. This chapter also describes the problems which have the people who don't fit into the binary gender division. The second chapter is a description of the hijra group in terms of culturally and analysis of the hijras religious affiliation. It attempts to answer the question of: 'who are the hijras'. The third chapter particular focused on the analysis of the specific hijra language. Language is one of the most important elements in the process of hijra socialization. Through the speech hijras are able to take linguistic control over the interlocutor. In this chapter described also the characteristic 'hijralect' and the way of negotiating by hijras their own social position, through the use of female and male speech and vulgarisms.
