STRESZCZENIENiniejsza praca magisterska bada literacką wizję przeszłości w powieściach historycznych autorstwa Hilary Mantel: A Place of Greater Safety (Kogo Śmierć Nie Sięgnie), Wolf Hall (W Komnatach Wolf Hall) i Bring up the Bodies (Na Szafocie). Analiza powieści służy wyróżnieniu charakterystycznych cech fikcji historycznej tworzonej przez Mantel. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie zabiegów literackich stosowanych przez Mantel, które pozwalają na przedstawienie przeszłości w nietypowy sposób. Praca ta jest podzielona na trzy części. Na początku pierwszej części przedstawione są początki powieści historycznej oraz próby zdefiniowania tego gatunku. Następnie zaprezentowane są współczesne trendy w literaturze historycznej. Uwzględnione są także przykłady współczesnych powieści historycznych ilustrujących wspomniane trendy. W ostatniej sekcji tej części pracy powieści Mantel omówione są w kontekście współczesnej powieści historycznej, aby ukazać wyjątkowość literackiego stylu autorki. Druga część rozprawy poświęcona jest szczegółowej analizie charakterystycznych cech w twórczości Mantel. SUMMARYThis MA thesis examines the literary vision of the past in the historical novels written by Hilary Mantel: A Place of Greater Safety, Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies. The analysis of the novels serves to illustrate the characteristic features of Mantel’s historical fiction. The aim of the thesis is to show literary techniques used by Mantel to present the past in an unusual manner. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the beginning of the first part the origins of the historical novel and attempts to define it are outlined. Subsequently, the modern trends in the historical fiction are presented. Examples of contemporary historical novels that illustrate those trends are included. In the last section of this part, Mantel’s novels are discussed in the context of contemporary British historical fiction in order to prove the uniqueness of Mantel’s manner of representing the past. The second part of the thesis is devoted to close analysis of the characteristic features of Mantel’s writing. The comparative analysis of A Place of Greater Safety and the Cromwell books is divided into five sections that concern, in turns, the structure of the novels and the plot, the narration, the role of dialogues, the choice of historical periods and themes touched upon by Mantel. The last part of the thesis focuses on the creation of characters and interactions between them. The perspective of historical figures in the novels is emphasized as one of the most significant features of Mantel’s historical fiction.
