Przekład intersemiotyczny powieści Wyrd Sisters Terry’ego Pratchetta ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem odwołań intertekstualnych

Celem pracy jest próba opracowania metody porównawczej tekstów źródłowych i docelowych w przekładzie intersemiotycznym i zastosowanie jej do przeprowadzenia porównawczej analizy syntagmatycznej powieści Terry’ego Pratchetta Wyrd Sisters z jej intersemiotycznym przekładem na polisystem teatru dokonanym przez Stephena Briggsa (autor dramatu) oraz grupę Falmouth and Exeter Cornwall Campus Light Entertainment Society.Realizacja celu wymaga usytuowania badań w kontekście semiotyki, której pierwszym założeniem jest traktowanie tekstu jako złożonego znaku. Przedstawiono podział na semiotykę holistyczną i atomistyczną oraz ich oddziaływanie na podejście semiotyczne. Następnie zaprezentowano dwa podstawowe dla współczesnej semiotyki modele znaków, z których wybrano model Peirce’a jako najlepiej odpowiadający potrzebom pracy, po czym opisano jego trzy części składowe (przedmiot, reprezentamen i interpretant). Przybliżono pojęcia kodów i systemów semiotycznych oraz semiotykę teatru. Wyznaczono miejsce przekładu intersemiotycznego w przekładoznawstwie ogólnym: opisano semiotyczny model procesu przekładu, jednostkę przekładu, oraz koncept ekwiwalencji. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu koncepcji intertekstualności i odwołań intertekstualnych, które są istotne dla analizy przedstawiono narzędzia stosowane podczas analizy, szczególnie teorię odbiorców i kompetencji U. Eco oraz regułę konwersacyjną Grice’a. Wyszczególniono etapy analizy, a następnie przeanalizowano fragmenty tekstów.Analiza przyniosła rezultaty w postaci wniosków dotyczących zarówno przekładu intersemiotycznego, jak i przekładoznawstwa ogólnego. Potwierdziła, że można porównać pisany tekst oryginalny i jego przekład w formie sztuki teatralnej stosując do tego celu Peirce’owski model znaku oraz reguły interpretacyjne U. Eco. Wydaje się też, że interpretanty analizowanych tekstów są na tyle podobne, że przekład można określić jako wierny. We wnioskach umieszczono również potencjalne techniki tłumaczeniowe, które zaobserwowano oraz zasugerowano, że to interpretant odgrywa najważniejszą rolę w przekładzie tekstów literackich. Ostatnim elementem pracy jest załącznik zawierający listę odniesień intertekstualnych odnalezionych w oryginalnym tekście.

The purpose of the thesis is an attempt at devising a method of comparing source and target text in intersemiotic translation and use it to perform a comparative syntagmatic analysis of the popular fantasy novel, Wyrd Sisters by Sir Terry Pratchett and its intersemiotic translation into the polisystem of theatre by Stephen Briggs and subsequently by the Falmouth and Exeter Cornwall Campus Light Entertainment Society. In order to achieve this goal a semiotic framework whose first assumption is that a text is a composite sign is established. The division between holistic and atomistic semiotics and their contribution to the semiotic approach is provided followed by two fundamental models of sign; the Peircean model is chosen as the most suitable one and its three components (object, representamen, and interpretant) are described. Then, the concepts of semiotic codes and systems and semiotics of theatre are introduced. The semiotic translation is set in the translation studies context: the semiotic model of translation process, unit of translation and the notion of equivalence are elaborated upon. After a short introduction of the notion of intertextuality and intertextual markers that are the central elements aiding the analysis, the analytical tools are provided, focusing on Eco’s theory of recipients and competences as well as Grice’s conversational principle. The detailed analytical steps are listed and chunks of text analysed according to them. The analysis results in conclusions pertaining both intersemiotic and general translation. It confirms that a written source text and a target text in the form of a staging are comparable by means of Peircean sign model and Eco’s interpretative rules. The second conclusion is that the interpretant of the analysed staging seems to be similar enough to the interpretant of the source text to call it a faithful translation. The thesis also lists some prospective translation techniques that were identified and suggests the prominent role of interpretant in translation of literal texts. At the end of the paper there is an Appendix listing intertextual markers found in the source text.
