‘Sigetski Leonidas’ in selected Slovakian and Croatian works.

Mianem ‘Sigetski Leonidas’ został określony Nikola Zrinski, chorwacki szlachcic i żołnierz, który zginął w oblężeniu twierdzy Siget w 1566 roku, bohatersko broniąc jej przed tureckim najazdem pod wodzą Sulejmana Wspaniałego.Celem pracy jest analiza wizerunku Zrinskiego zachowanego w trzech XVI-wiecznych utworach: chorwackiej kronice Ferenca Črnka Podsjedanje i osvojenje Sigeta, słowackim utworze Píseň o Sigetskem zámku oraz chorwackim eposie Brne Karnaruticia Vazetje Sigeta grada. Istotne jest, czy międzynarodowy bohater jest ukazany jako wzorowy rycerz i chrześcijanin, czy może posiada słabości i popełnia błędy. Interesujące jest również, co łączy postać Zrinskiego z Leonidasem, którego poświęcenie w wąwozie termopilskim stało się symbolem i wzorem dla potomnych.

The term ‘Sigetski Leonidas’ refers to Nikola Zrinski, a Croatian nobleman and a soldier, who died during the siege of Siget fortress in 1566, defending it heroically against the Turkish attack led by Suleiman the Magnificent. The aim of the thesis was an analysis of Zrinski’s image which has been preserved in three works from the sixteenth century: a Croatian chronicle by Ferenc Črnko Podsjedanje i osvojenje Sigeta, a Slovakian work Píseň o Sigetskem zámku and a Croatian epic Brne Karnaruticia Vazetje Sigeta grada. What is of significance is whether an international hero is presented as a model knight and Christian or perhaps as a person who has his weaknesses and makes mistakes. It is also interesting what is the connection between Zrinski and Leonidas, whose sacrifice in the ravine of Thermopylae has become the symbol and the role model for the posterity.
