Information behaviours and information needs of young people in the context of experiencing death as a crisis situation

Praca ma na celu sprawdzenie wpływu sytuacji kryzysowej w postaci doświadczenia śmierci na zachowania i potrzeby informacyjne osób młodych. Omówiono koncepcje i modele odnoszące się do zachowań informacyjnych, w tym model Everyday Life Information Seeking Reijo Savolainena i koncepcję tymczasowych miejsc informacyjnych Karen Fisher, oraz zaprezentowano wyniki badania własnego. Do ustalenia obecnego stanu badań oraz przedstawienia podstaw teoretycznych tematu zastosowano metodę krytycznej analizy piśmiennictwa. W badaniach własnych posłużono się techniką ankiety z użyciem kwestionariusza online, który powstał na kanwie badania Iny Fourie (Fourie 2020). Grupą poddaną badaniu byli studenci Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Wyniki wskazują, że doświadczenie śmierci ma wpływ na zachowania i potrzeby informacyjne osób młodych. Zwrócono jednak uwagę, że technika ankiety pozwoliła na zebranie niewystarczającej liczby wypełnionych kwestionariuszy, więc wyniki nie mogą być uogólniane na całą grupę badaną. Na podstawie wniosków wyciągniętych z trudności napotkanych w czasie badania, przedstawiono propozycję zmian, które powinny zostać rozważone przy planowaniu przyszłych badań nad podobnym tematem.

This thesis aims to examine the impact of a crisis situation in the form of a death experience on the information behaviours and information needs of young people. Concepts and models relating to information behaviour are discussed, including Reijo Savolainen’s Everyday Life Information Seeking model and Karen Fisher’s information grounds theory, and the results of the author’s research are presented. The method of critical analysis of the literature was used to establish the current state of the research and to present the theoretical basis of the thesis topic. The author’s research used a survey technique with an online questionnaire based on Ina Fourie’s study (Fourie 2020). The sample group for the author’s research was Jagiellonian University students. The research results indicate that the experience of death has an impact on the information behaviours and information needs of young people. However, it was noted that the survey technique allowed for the collection of an insufficient number of completed questionnaires, so the results cannot be generalised to the entire research group. Based on the conclusions drawn form the difficulties encountered during the research, a proposal for changes was made that should be considered when planning future research on a similar topic.
