Sailing with saint Brendan : on the medieval origins of European integration

Odwołując się do dwunastowiecznego tekstu francuskiego Le Voyage de Saint Brandan par Benedeit i jego kontynuacji, autorka przedstawia postać św. Brendana z Clonfert (ok. 483-ok. 577/583) jako postać integrującą poprzez swe nauczanie oraz styl życia (a szczególnie przez podróżowanie) nie tylko średniowieczną, ale i współczesną na Europę. Historia tego irlandzkiego mnicha jest ciekawym przykładem zjawiska integracji przez duchowość i literaturę.

Drawing on the twelfth-century French text Le Voyage de Saint Brandan par Benedeit and its sequel, the author presents Saint Brendan of Clonfert (c. 483–c. 577/583) as a figure who, through his teachings, lifestyle, and extensive travels, integrated not only medieval Europe but also Europe of his times. The story of this Irish monk is an interesting example of the phenomenon of cultural integration through spirituality and literature.
