Multilateralism Versus Unilateralism: The French Dilemma Facing Humanitarian Crises, from 1991 till 2013

In September 2013, the French president François Hollande threatened to use force against the Syrian regime for having used chemical weapons against the Syrian population. This announcement aroused a lot of issues, which can be embodied by one question: why has France disregarded multilateralism in this conflict?With this basis, I decided to analyze the French dilemma between multilateralism and unilateralism in the face of humanitarian crises. I have thus endeavoured to provide an answer to the question: why is multilateralism eventually meant at becoming France's strategy towards humanitarian crises?Eventually, the general framework of this Thesis has been as follows: showing that France is attached to human rights and multilateralism without being devoid of unilateral temptations, explaining why this alleged champion of multilateralism favors an assertive position towards humanitarian crises to the point sometimes of indulging into unilateralism, and concluding that this latter position cannot be sustained considering France's declining resources and that France needs multilateralism as its strategy facing humanitarian crises.
