"A milk witch" as described by the inhabitants of the Cieżkowicko-Roznowskie Foothills and its surroundings

Artykuł dotyczy stanu wiedzy najstarszego pokolenia ludności wiejskiej na temat wierzeń związanych z czarownicami. Materiał badawczy stanowią historie mówione zebrane podczas etnograficzno-lingwistycznych badań terenowych prowadzonych w latach 2005-2011 na Pogórzu Ciężkowicko-Rożnowskim (w Małopolsce). W przeszłości wierzono, że czarownice mogą rzucać czary i, przede wszystkim, psuć krowie mleko i właśnie na tym aspekcie działania czarownic koncentruje się artykuł. Na podstawie wypowiedzi mieszkańców opisano cechy wyglądu i zachowania osób uznawanych za czarownice, ich sposób działania, efekty czarów oraz metody stosowane w celu przeciwdziałania "czarom mlecznym" i odwracania ich. Przedstawiono także słownictwo używane do opisywania osób posądzanych o czary a także stosunek do informatorów do wierzeń w czarownice. Współczesne relacje o czarownicach zostały porównane z informacjami z innych regionów Polski oraz z dawnymi przekazami na ten temat ze źródeł etnograficznych dotyczących badanego obszaru.

The article discusses the knowledge of the oldest generation of the rural population about witches and related magical beliefs. The article is based on ethnographic-linguistic fieldwork conducted by the author in 2005-2011 in the Highlands of Ciężkowice-Rożnów (Lesser Poland). In the past it was believed that witches could cast spells and, primarily, spoil cow's milk. The article focuses on the latter aspect of witches' activity and presents the data on such elements as the appearance and behaviour of the witch, her modus operandi, effects of spells, and methods used to counteract "milk spells" and reverse them. The author also presents the vocabulary used to describe such persons, as well as the attitude to the informants to the beliefs in witches. Contemporary accounts on witches have been compared with the information from other regions of Poland and from historical ethnographic sources about the area under study.
