"Wprawdzie jedna płeć jest od drugiej różna, lecz mieszają się ze sobą" – zmienne tożsamości w polskim przekładzie "Orlando" Virginii Woolf

Niniejsza praca ma na celu zbadać zmiany w tożsamości wybranych bohaterów "Orlando: A Biography" (1928) autorstwa Virginii Woolf, poprzez porównanie oryginału z jego polskim przekładem Tomasza Bieronia, zatytułowanym "Orlando" (1996). Pierwszy rozdział zawiera krótką biografię Virginii Woolf, w której przedstawiona zostaje jej relacja z Vitą Sackville-West, będąca główną inspiracją do napisania "Orlando". Rozdział zamyka wprowadzający opis "Orlando", poruszający aspekty istotne dla dalszej analizy, takie jak wtrącenia narratora czy tożsamość tytułowego Orlanda. Drugi rozdział przedstawia podstawy do analizy punktu widzenia bohaterów, czerpiąc z "Point of View: A Linguistic Analysis of Literary Style" (1990) autorstwa Susan Ehrlich. Następnie omówiona zostaje książka "Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation" (1993) Elżbiety Tabakowskiej. Szczególna uwaga zostaje poświęcona ekwiwalencji na poziomie obrazowania i jej wymiarom, które mogą zostać zastosowane w analizie przekładu. Trzeci rozdział otwiera analiza punktu widzenia Orlanda. Następnie porównane są obrazy biografa-narratora w oryginale oraz przekładzie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jego relacji z czytelnikiem. W ostatniej części rozdziału analizowane są zmiany w tożsamości płciowej oraz androgynii Orlanda.

This thesis aims to analyze the shifts in identity of the chosen characters in Virginia Woolf’s "Orlando: A Biography" (1928), by comparing the original with its Polish translation "Orlando" (1996) by Tomasz Bieroń. The first chapter comprises a short biography of Virginia Woolf, focusing on her relationship with Vita Sackville-West as the major inspiration for the writing of "Orlando". The chapter closes with an introductory description of "Orlando", mentioning the narrator’s intrusive comments and the titular Orlando’s identity as the aspects relevant for further analysis. The second chapter introduces the basis for the analysis of a character’s point of view, drawing on Susan Ehrlich’s "Point of View: A Linguistic Analysis of Literary Style" (1990). Further, it introduces Elżbieta Tabakowska’s "Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation" (1993), laying emphasis on the equivalence on the level of imagery and its dimensions, which can be applied to translation analysis. The third chapter begins with the analysis of Orlando’s point of view. Then it compares the images of the biographer-narrator in the original and the translation, highlighting his relation to the reader. Finally, Orlando’s identity in translation is analysed, with the main focus on the shifts in their gender identity and androgyny.
