The characteristics of favela movies in the plot of “City of God”

Niniejsza praca licencjacka koncentruje się na filmie “Cidade de Deus” w reżyserii Fernando Meirellesa i Kátii Lund. Jej celem jest przedstawienie cech gatunku filmowego zwanego favela movies poprzez analizę tej produkcji. Praca skupia się głównie na jej fabularnej zgodności z rzeczywistością oraz na przedstawieniu społeczności zamieszkującej fawelę. Wprowadza również pojęcia faweli oraz procesu fawelizacji w Brazylii, które pomagają wyróżnić cechy szczególne tego gatunku filmowego. Poprzez poniższą analizę można zaobserwować, że favela movies prezentują zniekształcony obraz społeczności favel, nadmiernie eksponując przemoc, pomijając jednocześnie kwestie zaniedbania przez państwo czy stygmatyzacji społecznej mieszkańców favel.

The following paper concentrates on the film “City of God” by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. Its objective is to present the characteristics of the cinematic genre known as favela movies through the analysis of this production. It focuses mainly on its conformity with reality and the representation of the favela community. The work introduces the concepts of the favela and the process of favelization in Brazil, which help highlight some of the particular traits of this genre. Through this analysis, it is possible to observe that favela movies present a distorted vision of favela communities, excessively emphasizing violence, while omitting issues such as state negligence or the social stigmatization of favela’s residents.

A presente trabalho de licenciatura centra-se no filme “Cidade de Deus” de Fernando Meirelles e Kátia Lund. O seu objetivo é apresentar as características do gênero cinematográfico nomeado favela movies, atráves da análise da produção. Focaliza-se, sobretudo, na sua conformidade com a realidade e a representação da comunidade do morro. O trabalho introduz os conceitos da favela e do processo da favelização no Brasil, que ajudam a destacar traços particulares deste tipo de filmes. Atráves desta análise, é possível observar que as favela movies apresentam uma visão distorcida das comunidades faveladas, sublinhando excessivamente a violência e omitindo questões da negligência do estado ou a estigmatização social dos favelados.
