Dance as a narrative technique in a musical, based on the example of "Hamilton"

Musical jest współczesną formą teatru muzycznego, charakterystyczną dla kultury amerykańskiej XX wieku. Słowo, muzyka i taniec to trzy równoprawne elementy musicalu, które prowadzą narrację. Praca opisuje zagadnienia teoretyczne na temat musicalu scenicznego i filmowego, na temat historii i genezy tańca, a także objaśnia temat tańca musicalowego. Opisano 7 funkcji tańca w musicalu na podstawie teorii Richarda Kislana, a także zaanalizowano choreografię musicalu "Hamilton". Na przykładzie tego spektaklu rozszerzono dotychczasowe tezy na temat funkcji tańca w musicalu, identyfikując cztery, niezdefiniowane przez Richarda Kislana możliwości tańca: obrazowanie słów czy tekstów piosenek, ustanawianie motywów przewodnich za pomocą idiomów ruchowych, manipulacja czasem akcji i możliwość samodzielnego prowadzenia narracji przez tworzenie niezależnej postaci ruchowej. Pokazano, że choreografia we współczesnych musicalach może spełniać inne jeszcze funkcje niż dotychczas opisane w literaturze. Praca systematyzuje wcześniej już znaną wiedzę na temat tańca jako narzędzia narracyjnego w musicalu i definiuje jego nowe możliwości.

A musical is a contemporary form of musical theater, characteristic of 20th-century American culture. Word, music, and dance are three equal elements of the musical that guide the narrative. The work describes theoretical issues about stage and film musicals, about the history and genesis of dance, and also explains the topic of musical dance. The 7 dance functions in the musical were described based on the theory of Richard Kislan, and the choreography of the musical "Hamilton" was analyzed. On the example of this performance, the previous theses on the function of dance in a musical were expanded, identifying four possibilities of dance, not defined by Richard Kislan: imaging of words or song texts, establishing leitmotifs using movement idioms, manipulating the time of action and the possibility of independent narration by creating an independent character movement. It has been shown that choreography in contemporary musicals may fulfill other functions than those previously described in the literature. The work systematizes the previously known knowledge of dance as a narrative tool in a musical and defines its new possibilities.
