The image of the middle class in the comedies of Goldoni: the case of "The Antiquarian's Family", "The Coffee House" and "The Boors"

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przedstawienie obrazu mieszczaństwa w komediach Carla Goldoniego na podstawie trzech sztuk (Rodzina zbieracza starożytności, Kawiarenka wenecka, Gbury),ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wykazania różnic między poszczególnymi przedstawicielami tej klasy społecznej, przeciwstawiając wizję pozytywną mieszczaństwa weneckiego XVIII wieku tej negatywnej, charakterystycznej dla późniejszego, bardziej dojrzałego etapu twórczości autora. Pierwszy rozdział teoretyczny poświęcony jest figurze Goldoniego, jego reformie teatralnej, a także wizji społeczeństwa w nieco szerszej perspektywie, ponieważ widocznej w całokształcie jego twórczości. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest wybranym trzem komediom, a także analizie poszczególnych bohaterów, z których każdy został zanalizowany osobno.W trzecim rozdziale wszystkie postaci zostają ze sobą porównane celem wykazania różnic między poszczególnymi wizjami mieszczaństwa w sztukach Goldoniego.

This main goal of this thesis is to show the image of the middle class in the comedies of Goldoni on the basis of three works (The antiquarian’s fmaily, The Coffee House, The Boors) with particular attention to highlight the differences between the specifed representatives of this social class and therefore the positive vision of the venetian middle class in the 18th century and the negative one, characteristic for the later and more mature period in the artistic life of the playwrighter. The first chapter is dedicated to Goldoni, his reform of theatre and his vision of the society from a more broad perspective, since based on the whole of his plays. The second chapter is about three chosen comedies and the analysis of the protagonists who are examined seperetly. In the third part of the thesis all the caracters are compared with each other in order to demonstrate the biggest differences between the image of the middle class visible in Goldoni’s works.

Questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di presentare l’immagine della borghesia nelle commedie di Goldoni sulla base di tre opere (La famiglia dell’antiquario, La bottega del caffè, I rusteghi), con la particolare attenzione a dimostrare le differenze tra i rappresentanti di questo ceto sociale, contrapponendo la visione positiva della borghesia veneta del Settecento a quella negativa, caratteristica per il periodo posteriore e più maturo della fase artistica dell’autore. Il primo capitolo teorico è dedicato alla figura di Goldoni, alla sua riforma teatrale e anche alla sua visione della società nella prospettiva un po’ più ampia, perché riscontrabile in tutte le sue opere. Il secondo capitolo presenta le tre commedie scelte e propone l’analisi dei protagonisti che vengono esaminati seperatamente. Nel terzo capitolo tutti i caratteri vengono messi a confronto con lo scopo di mostrare le maggiori differenze tra le visioni della borgesia nelle commedie goldoniane.
