The nature of kitsune. A preliminary analysis on the basis of selected works.

Japoński folklor pełen jest opowieści o zwierzętach, które posiadły różnego rodzaju magiczne moce. Jednymi z nich są lisy, zwane po japońsku kitsune. Liczba przesądów z nimi związanych, jak i historii, które o nich opowiadają, jest ogromna. Zwierzęta te są także ważną częścią kultu bóstwa Inari. Wizerunek lisów w japońskim folklorze nie jest jednolity, a poszczególne osobniki różnią się między sobą swoim usposobieniem. Celem niniejsze pracy jest analiza zachowań kitsune pojawiających się w japońskim folklorze i próba ustalenia, jaka jest ich natura. Autor będzie starał się też zbadać, czy zwierzęta te są jednorodne pod względem usposobienia oraz czy ich negatywny wizerunek wśród mieszkańców dawnej Japonii jest uzasadniony.

The Japanese folklore is abundant in the tales about animals that have acquired various magical powers. Among them, there are foxes, which are called kitsune in Japanese. The sheer number of beliefs concerning them or stories in which they appear is outstanding. These animals also play an important role in the cult of goddess Inari. The image of the fox is not homogenous and the temper of every single specimen is different. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the behavior of kitsune which appear in folk stories and to attempt to determine their nature. The author of this dissertation will also try to examine whether foxes' temper is homogenous and if their bad image in Japan in the past is justified.
