A video clip depicting a burglary was shown to eighty-seven participants. The following day they completed either an enhanced cognitive interview (ECI; n = 43) or a structured interview (SI; n = 44). The participants in the ECI group reported more correct details than those in the SI group (43.12 compared to 32.39) and slightly more incorrect details (1.53 compared to 0.80). No significant differences were observed for the confabulated details. The number of both correct (41.58 compared to 31.59) and incorrect (8.28 compared to 6.07) details of which the participants were confident was higher in the ECI than in the SI group. No differences emerged where the number of details of which the participants were unconfident was concerned. In the structured interview group, the men produced more confabulated details than the women (5.29 compared to 2.56). No other gender differences were observed in either group. The interviewers differed in the quality of testimony obtained in the SI, but not in the ECI.
