Hymns to Zeus in Aeschylus’ " Suppliants "

Praca ta wpisuje się w nurt badań nad gatunkami lirycznymi występującymi w tragedii greckiej okresu klasycznego. Zagadnienie to nie doczekało się jeszcze kompletnego opracowania, a analiza poszczególnych fragmentów dzieł tragików wciąż pozostaje przedmiotem dyskusji. W swoim studium dowodzę hymnicznej struktury, treści i funkcji czterech pieśni chóralnych "Błagalnic" Ajschylosa. Analizę filologiczną wybranych przeze mnie fragmentów poprzedza podanie subiektywnej definicji pieśni hymnicznej, opartej na dotychczasowych badaniach literaturoznawczych i genologicznych. Definicja ta jest punktem wyjścia do analizy strukturalnej pieśni tragedii, którą przedstawiam za pomocą graficznych ilustracji oraz krótkiego komentarza, skupiającego się na budowie poszczególnych hymnów. Ostatnim elementem pracy jest analiza samej treści hymnów w kontekście całej tragedii, która uwzględnia również wnioski na temat nawiązań hymnicznych w pieśniach "Błagalnic". Analizie tej towarzyszy komentarz do wybranych przeze mnie zagadnień, związanych przede wszystkim ze światem religijnym dramatu oraz religijną funkcją hymnu.Dodatkiem do pracy jest autorski przekład pieśni "Błagalnic", który pozostaje możliwie najbardziej wierny oryginalnemu tekstowi sztuki Ajschylosa.

This work is placed in the stream of investigation of lyrical genres in Greek drama of the classical period. This problem has not been discussed thoroughly yet; moreover, the analysis of particular fragments of dramatists’ works is still under discussion.In my analysis I prove that the four choral songs of Aeschylus’ "Suppliants" have the structure, form and function of a hymn. The philological analysis of the chosen fragments is preceded by the subjective definition of the hymn based on previous literary and genealogical investigation. This definition is a stepping stone for the structural analysis of the songs of drama, which is presented in graphs’ form with a short comment focused on the structure of particular hymns. The last element of the work encompasses the contents’ analysis of the hymns in the context of the whole drama entailing conclusions to the elements of the hymn in the songs of "Suppliants". The analysis is enriched by the commentary to the chosen problems connected mainly with sacral world of the tragedy and the religious function of the hymn. As an appendix I attach the most accurate translation of the original text of Aeschylus’ play.
