The integration of a letter and a picture. Analysis of the phenomenon based on selected Polish book covers scince the second half of the XX century

Litera i obraz mogą łączyć się ze sobą w najróżniejszych relacjach. Od dawna artyści podejmują próby scalenia obrazu i litery, co zaobserwować można w sztuce i grafice użytkowej. Praca podejmuje problematykę występowania tego zjawiska ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem polskich okładek i obwolut książkowych.W tym celu pierwsza część wywodu nakreśla tło historyczne, które pozwala objąć genezę zjawiska, jego charakterystykę oraz występowanie. Wpisanie problemu w szerszy kontekst jest konieczne by uwzględnić jego specyfikę. W kolejnym rozdziale autor koncentruje się na samym zagadnieniu okładki i obwoluty książkowej. Rozważa jej dzisiejszy kształt, znaczenie, funkcje oraz cele, następnie przedstawia pierwsze próby scalenia litery i obrazu na okładce. W ostatnim rozdziale autor przechodzi do analizy konkretnych przykładów na okładkach od drugiej połowy XX w.Za materiał do analizy służą odpowiednio wyselekcjonowane przykłady. Dla klarowności i porządku wywodu zostały przyjęte konieczne kryteria formalne, a materiał podzielono na trzy kategorie reprezentatywne dla zjawiska: modyfikacje w obrębie kształtu litery, litera jako integralna część ilustracji oraz znaczący układ liter.

A letter and a picture can be combined in various relationships. For a long time artists have been attempting to integrate a letter and a picture as can be seen in art and graphic design. The paper discusses the occurrence of this phenomenon with particular emphasis on Polish book covers and jackets.The first part of the paper sets out a historical background that allows to cover the genesis of the phenomenon, its characteristics and occurrence. Presenting a problem in a wider context is necessary to see its specific character. In the next chapter, the author focuses on the issue of book cover and jacket. The author reflects on its present shape, meaning, functions and goals, then presents the first attempts to integrate a letter and a picture on the cover. The last chapter includes the analysis of specific examples on the covers scince the second half of the XX century.The material for the analysis is provided by appropriately selected examples. The necessary formal criteria were adopted for the clarity and order of the argument, and the material was divided into three categories representative for the phenomenon: modifications within the shape of the letter, the letter as an integral part of the illustration and a significant arrangement of letters.
