Zamachy z 11 września w utworach Spadając Dona DeLillo oraz Windows on the World Frédérica Beigbedera

Zamachy terrorystyczne z 11 września 2001 r. miały ogromny wpływ na życie społeczne i kulturalne zarówno w Stanach Zjednoczonych jak i na całym świecie. Niniejsza praca skupia się na dwóch dziełach literackich, które poruszają temat zamachów, a mianowicie Spadając Dona DeLillo i Windows on the World autorstwa francuskiego pisarza, F. Beigbedera. Wydarzenia z 11 września są omawiane z punktu widzenia zarówno teorii psychologii jak i filozofii oraz literatury. Analizując zmagania autorów z trudnym tematem, niniejsza praca skupia się na trzech aspektach wyżej wymienionych utworów, o których pisze DeLillo w swoim eseju „W ruinach przyszłości.” Praca ta podkreśla także rolę literatury jako niezbędnego elementu w procesie upamiętniania traumatycznych wydarzeń oraz w przybliżaniu tego trudnego tematu.

The terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001 proved to be vastly influential both in the social and cultural aftermath. The following thesis discusses two works which focus on these events: Don DeLillo’s Falling Man and Frédéric Beigbeder’s Windows on the World. It analyzes the events from a number of different perspectives: psychological, philosophical and literary. It examines how the writers engage with the precarious past in order to give the events memory, tenderness and meaning advocated by DeLillo in his 2001 essay “In the Ruins of the Future.” The thesis highlights the role of literature in the process of commemoration and ends with a conclusion that chronological distance is required in order to reintegrate the events into our lives.
