The temporal structure and its legitimizing functions in Master Vincentius’ Chronica Polonorum

Praca poświęcona jest analizie kategorii temporalnych oraz ich funkcjom legitymizacyjnym w "Kronice polskiej" Mistrza Wincentego Kadłubka. Głównym jej celem jest ukazanie mechanizmów narracyjnych, za pomocą których kronikarz instrumentalizuje strukturę czasu, aby uzasadnić prawa do władzy zwierzchniej Kazimierza Sprawiedliwego oraz zabezpieczyć sukcesję dynastyczną jego potomków. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. W rozdziale pierwszym osadzono dzieło Kadłubka w dwunastowiecznym kontekście intelektualnym, analizując sylwetkę samego autora, genezę utworu oraz teoretyczne i retoryczne podstawy gatunku kronikarskiego. Rozdział drugi koncentruje się na analizie strukturalnej dwóch modeli czasu w kronice, dzieląc struktury temporalne na cykliczną (dominującą w opisie dziejów bajecznych) i linearną (stającą się kręgosłupem chronologicznym, w którym biologicznym ciągiem trwania staje się linia sukcesji Piastów). Trzeci rozdział pracy poświęcony został teleologicznemu wymiarowi dziejów i autorskiej wizji przyszłości linii Piastów. Na podstawie analizy kluczowych motywów symbolicznych dowiedziono, że rządy Kazimierza Sprawiedliwego zostały wykreowane na cel historycznego wektora. Rozdział omawia również, w jaki sposób Kadłubek, przeciwstawiając doraźność elekcji trwałości sukcesji, rezerwuje i porządkuje czas przyszły władztwa jako wyłączne dziedzictwo linii kazimierzowskiej. Praca dowodzi, że czas w "Kronice polskiej" nie jest jedynie tłem dla opisywanych wydarzeń, lecz stanowi kluczowe tworzywo filozoficzno-polityczne, służące do budowania ciągłości instytucjonalnej państwa.

The dissertation is devoted to the analysis of temporal categories and their legitimizing functions in the "Chronica Polonorum" by Master Vincentius Kadłubek. Its primary objective is to demonstrate the narrative mechanisms through which the chronicler instrumentalizes the structure of time to justify the supreme power rights of Casimir II the Just and to secure the dynastic succession of his descendants. The dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter contextualizes Kadłubek’s work within the twelfth-century intellectual context, analyzing the author's profile, the genesis of the piece, as well as the theoretical and rhetorical foundations of the chronicle genre. The second chapter focuses on the structural analysis of two models of time within the chronicle, dividing the temporal structures into a cyclical one (predominant in the description of legendary history) and a linear one (which becomes the chronological backbone, where the Piast succession line serves as the biological continuum of duration). The third chapter is dedicated to the teleological dimension of history and the author's vision for the future of the Piast line. Based on the analysis of key symbolic motifs, it is demonstrated that the reign of Casimir the Just was crafted as the ultimate goal of the historical vector. This chapter also discusses how Kadłubek, by contrasting the immediacy of election with the permanence of succession, reserves and organizes the future time of the realm as the exclusive heritage of the Casimiran line. The dissertation proves that time in the Chronica Polonorum is not merely a backdrop for the described events, but constitutes a crucial philosophical and political material used to build the institutional continuity of the state.
