The Biblia pauperum – a sequence or a typology? About the relation of the text and the image in selected examples of medieval and modern picture Biblis

Temat pracy dotyczy historii, budowy oraz przeznaczenia Biblii pauperum – średniowiecznego, ilustrowanego kodeksu teologicznego. Analiza komponentów kompozycyjnych kodeksu dostarczyła wiedzy na temat funkcji i relacji tychże elementów. Wykazano, że obraz i tekst w Biblii pauperum nie są narzędziami do budowy narracyjnej opowieści o wydarzeniach z Pisma Świętego. Obrazy zestawione typologicznie służą wykazaniu analogii między Starym i Nowym Testamentem. Następnie podjęto próbę zrewidowania poglądów na temat rzekomego związku Biblii pauperum i komiksu. Rozważania te zostały podparte przykładami innych średniowiecznych ksiąg. Na koniec przyjrzano się współczesnym Bibliom obrazkowym w kontekście możliwych podobieństw do Biblii pauperum. Ponadto zanalizowano je pod względem treści i poziomu realizacji projektu.

The subject of this work concerns the history, the construction and the purpose of the Biblia pauperum - a medieval, illustrated theological codex. The analysis of the Codex’s compositional components provided a knowledge about the function and the relation of these elements. It was shown that the image and the text in the Bibla pauperum are not instruments to build a narrative story about events from the Holy Bible. Images, related typologically, show the analogy between the Old and New Testaments. Then, the attempt was made to revise views on the supposed relationship of the Bibla pauperum and comic books. These considerations were supported by examples of other medieval codices. Finally, modern picture Biblies were examined in the context of possible similarities to the Bibla pauperum. In addition, they were analysed in terms of content and level of project’s implementation.
