Analiza metafor konceptualnych w książce Jeremiego Clarksona „Wiem, że masz duszę” w świetle piramidy korelacji pomiędzy różnymi poziomami ekwiwalencji

Niniejsza praca jest analizą metafor konceptualnych oraz wyrażeń metaforycznych w książce „Wiem, że masz duszę” autorstwa brytyjskiego dziennikarza Jeremiego Clarksona. Praca podzielona została na trzy części. Pierwsza i druga omawiają teorię metafory pojęciowej, która wraz z uzupełniającymi ją metodami analizy posłużyła do szczegółowego zinterpretowania metafor w części trzeciej. Analiza ta pozwoliła na wysunięcie tezy o istnieniu piramidy korelacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi poziomami ekwiwalencji na poziomie określanym jako poziom obrazowania. Od najniższego poziomu podstawowych konceptów i doświadczeń, poprzez poziom indywidualnych wyrażeń metaforycznych i prostych metafor konceptualnych po wyższy poziom centralnych metafor artykułów i najwyższy poziom głównej metafory książki, którą jest metafora MASZYNA TO ISTOTA ŻYWA. Każde zaburzenie obrazowania pomiędzy oryginałem a przekładem, na jednym z poziomów ekwiwalencji, wpływa na ekwiwalencję każdego z wyższych poziomów piramidy. Pomimo, iż tłumacze zdołali zachować główną metaforę książki, dokonali tego w mniej obrazowy sposób niż autor. Ponieważ zaburzyli oni poziom obrazowania w tak wielu przetłumaczonych wyrażeniach, czytelnik przekładu nie wykrystalizował w swoim umyśle obrazu maszyny jako żywej istoty tak mocno, jak zrobił to czytelnik oryginału. Niniejsza praca pozwoliła potwierdzić te wnioski poprzez szczegółową analizę wybranych metaforycznych wyrażeń i metafor pojęciowych.

Metaphor has been known from millennia. It has accompanied human beings since they for the first time tried to define what they did not understand. Cognitive linguistics raised it to the status of one of the most crucial phenomena of language. This thesis has been based on the theory of conceptual metaphor. Together with complementary theories of metaphor interpretation I have evaluated different approaches to translation of metaphor and cognitive abilities essential in this process. Finally, I have proved the double hypothesis of my paper, which is: the postulated pyramid of correlation between different levels of equivalence and the influence of incongruencies between original and translated conceptual metaphors on the level of imagery upon these levels of equivalence. To achieve my purpose I have thoroughly analysed examples of metaphorical expressions and conceptual metaphors drawn from the book I Know You Got Soul written by one of the most recognisable journalists in the world – Jeremy Clarkson. The particular levels of equivalence form the figure of the pyramid of correlation. From the lowest level of concepts and basic experiences, through the level of individual expressions and simple metaphors to the higher level of central metaphors of the articles and the highest level of the main complex metaphor of the book. Any disturbances on one level of the pyramid affect the equivalence on the upper levels. All in all, the translators preserved the main complex metaphor of the book which is A MACHINE IS A LIVING BEING, but it was not done to a sufficient extent. Because they have disrupted the equivalence on the level of imagery in a substantial number of expressions, the reader did not conceptualise the machine as a living being as strongly as he or she would have done after reading the original which I have proved by analyzing selected expressions in my thesis.
