Przedmiotem pracy są wybrane zagadnienia z okresu w powojennej historii Stanów Zjednoczonych, znanego pod pojęciem makkartyzmu. Omawiany okres obejmuje lata od 1947 r. do 1954 r. Praca jest próbą przybliżenia kontekstu historycznego, będącego nie tylko tłem, ale także przyczyną przyjęcia postaw skrajnie antykomunistycznych w amerykańskim społeczeństwie, m. in. narastające rozbieżności pomiędzy Stanami Zjednoczonymi i Związkiem Radzieckim. Praca omawia działania prawne amerykańskiego Kongresu i prezydenta w celu ograniczenia wpływów Partii Komunistycznej w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Działania te przejawiały się w funkcjonowaniu komisji badających poziom infiltracji komunistycznej w różnych grupach zawodowych. Ważnymi elementami tych działań był także program lojalności pracowników zainicjowany przez prezydenta Trumana oraz antykomunistyczne ustawy amerykańskiego Kongresu. Przedmiotem pracy są także głośne i przez większość autorów uznawane za początek epoki makkartyzmu przesłuchania przedstawicieli przemysłu filmowego skupionego w Hollywood. Do dziś czarna lista przemysłu rozrywkowego pozostaje jednym z najbardziej pamiętnych przejawów makkartyzmu. Dodatkowe miejsce zostało poświęcone dyskryminacji na przykładach Arthura Millera oraz Charlesa Chaplina. Omówione zostały też przejawy makkartyzmu na amerykańskich uczelniach wyższych. Tematem pracy jest także sylwetka Josepha McCarthy`ego, bez którego nie można mówić o makkartyźmie. Senator nie był twórcą zjawiska, lecz posunięcie przez niego antykomunizmu do skrajności było przyczyną upadku nie tylko samego senatora, ale kompromitacji i zakończenia niechlubnego okresu w historii Stanów Zjednoczonych.

The subject of this Master`s thesis are selected issues of a short period in postwar U.S. history, known as McCarthyism. The period covers the years from 1947 to 1954 and the thesis is an attempt to discuss the historical context, which is not only the background, but also the cause for the creation of the extreme anti-communist attitudes in American society, to name just the growing differences between the United States and the Soviet Union. Thesis discusses the legal actions of the U.S. Congress and the president in order to reduce the influence of the Communist Party in the United States. These activities are manifested in the functioning of the committees investigating communist infiltration in different occupational groups. The important elements of these activities were also a staff loyalty program initiated by President Truman and the anti-American laws created by Congress. The subject of the thesis are also the hearings of representatives of the film industry centered in Hollywood, by most authors considered to be the beginning of the McCarthyism. To this day, blacklisting of the entertainment industry remains one of the most memorable expressions of McCarthyism. Additional attention has been devoted to examples of discrimination of Arthur Miller and Charles Chaplin. Also discussed are the manifestations of McCarthyism at American universities. The main subject of the thesis is Senator Joseph McCarthy, without whom the period known as McCarthyism cannot be discussed. Senator was not the creator of the phenomenon, but he took it to the extreme and was the ultimate cause of ending this infamous period of American history.
