Episcopal Heraldry of Archdiocese of Kraków

Celem niniejszej pracy było scharakteryzowanie heraldyki biskupów archidiecezji krakowskiej w latach 1925–2011. Wskazano na podstawowe cechy heraldyki biskupiej tej archidiecezji i tendencje w niej występujące. W rozdziale pierwszym omówiono podstawowe problemy teoretyczne i terminologiczne heraldyki kościelnej, genezę herbu w Kościele katolickim oraz przedstawiono zarys stanu badań nad heraldyką biskupią w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu. W rozdziale drugim przedstawiono rys historyczny prawodawstwa heraldycznego w Kościele katolickim oraz ukazano wpływ tych regulacji prawnych na zasady heraldyki kościelnej. Rozdział trzeci zawiera zarys dziejów diecezji i archidiecezji krakowskiej w latach 1911–2011. W rozdziale czwartym zamieszczono biogramy biskupów, których pontyfikaty przypadły na lata 1925–2011. Rozdział piąty dotyczy analizy herbów biskupów krakowskich w latach 1925–2011 ze wskazaniem na szczególną rolę symboliki chrystologicznej i mariologicznej w herbach pasterzy archidiecezji krakowskiej.

The aim of this thesis is to characterize the heraldry of the bishops from Archdiocese of Kraków in the years 1925–2011 as well as to indicate some basic features and trends concerning the episcopal heraldry of this archdiocese. In the first chapter the crucial theoretical and terminological problems of ecclesiastical heraldry and the appearance of coats of arms in the Catholic Church are discussed. The initial chapter presents also an outline of Polish scientific literature which deals with episcopal heraldry. In the second chapter a short history of heraldic legislation in the Catholic Church and its influence on the rules of ecclesiastical heraldry were described. The third chapter contains an outline of the history of Archdiocese of Kraków in the period of 1911–2011. The fourth chapter is comprised of short biographies of the bishops who served in this Archdiocese in the period of 1925–2011. Finally, the fifth chapter analyses the coats of arms of the bishops from Archdiocese of Kraków in the years 1925–2011 and reveals a special role of Christological and Mariological symbolism in these coats of arms.
