Ephemeral tribes and the "phoney war" of giants : a sketch on the history of Slavs living at the foot of the Western Sudetes

W artykule, inspirowanym dokonaniami Jubilata w dziedzinie studiów nad regionami pogranicznymi, podjęto próbę łącznej interpretacji danych historycznych i archeologicznych dotyczących dziejów przedpola Bram Żytawskiej i Lubawskiej (obejmujący górne i środkowe dorzecza Kaczawy i Bobru oraz górne: Nysy Łużyckiej) w drugiej połowie IX i X wieku. Wynikiem przedstawionego w tekście wywodu jest wniosek, że nieliczne źródła pisane pozwalają na uprawdopodobnienie tezy o znacznej aktywności na omawianym terenie księstwa Przemyślidów w okresie konfliktu Bolesława I Srogiego z Ottonem I; skutkiem tej aktywności oraz kontrakcji ze strony sojuszników Liudolfingów było zapewne znikanie ze źródeł pewnych ugrupowań etnopolitycznych (Bieżuńczanie), a pojawianie się innych (Bobrzanie, Trzebowianie). Na tym samym tle należałoby zapewne interpretować także pewne znaczące znaleziska archeologiczne z dorzeczy Nysy, Bobru i Kaczawy, przede wszystkim importy o proweniencji staromadziarskiej. Przedstawiona hipoteza jest propozycją interpretacji geopolitycznej danych historycznych i archeologicznych, których dotychczas raczej nie próbowano odczytać w taki sposób; postulatem dla dalszych badań historycznych i archeologicznych jest jej weryfikacja (bądź falsyfikacja).

In the paper, inspired by the achievements of the Revered Celebrant in the field of studies on borderlands in the Slavic world, an attempt was made to combine the historical and archeological data concerning the history of the Slavs living on the foothills of the Western Sudetes (catchment basins of upper and middle Nysa Łużycka and Bóbr rivers) in the second half of the ninth and in the tenth centuries. The result of the conducted reasoning is that, according to scarce written sources, the area of interest was subject to active influence of the Přemyslid duchy under Bolesláv I in the period of his conflict with King Otto I (936–950); probably the result of those activities and the counter-reactions of the allies of Otto I was the disappearance of some local ethnopolities (Bieżuńczanie) and the creation of others (Bobrzanie, Trzebowianie). On such a background also some important archeological findings from the valleys of Nysa, Bóbr and Kaczawa rivers should be viewed, especially the imports of Old-Magyar provenance. The hypothesis presented in the paper is the first attempt of geo-political interpretation of joint written and material sources on the topic; the task for further research — especially archeological — should be, therefore, its verification or falsification.
