During the XX century the substantial increase of elderly people, especially among those aged 80 years and more was observed. Taking into account the current demographical development in Switzerland and expected further increase of elderly subjects dementia, depression, falls, fall-related consequences as well as ischemic stroke maintain signifi cant medical, nursing and socio-economical issues.

Während des XX Jahrhunderts wurde ein bedeutsamer Zuwachs der älteren Personen (d.h. Personen im Alter von 65 Jahren und mehr) registriert. In Anbetracht der aktuellen demographischen Entwicklung in der Schweiz bleiben somit Demenz, Depressionen, Stürze und ihre sturzbedingte Konsequenzen sowie ischämische Schlaganfälle bei Betagten wichtige medizinische, pfl egerische und sozio- ökonomische Gesundheitsprobleme.
