Metalepsis in Works of Grant Morrison. Analysis of Animal Man, The Invisibles and Flex Mentallo Comic Book Series

W niniejszej pracy analizuje twórczość szkockiego scenarzysty komiksowego Granta Morrisona pod kątem użycia tropu metalepsy w trzech seriach komiksowych z wczesnego etapu ich kariery: Animal Man, The Invisibles i Flex Mentallo. W pierwszym rozdziale przyglądam się komiksowi Animal Man, argumentując, że już tu Morrison na szeroką skalę stosują metalepsę, aby zarysować swój pogląd na relację fikcji i rzeczywistości oraz skrytykować konkretne trendy i praktyki na amerykańskim rynku komiksowym. W drugim rozdziale natomiast skupiam się na przedstawieniu krystalizującej się na łamach komiksu The Invisibles filozofii twórczej Morrisona, według której granica między fikcją i światem rzeczywistym jest płynna i niestała. Trzeci rozdział przeznaczam na analizę komiksu Flex Mentallo, ponownie skupiając się na metaleptycznym charakterze tego tekstu i aplikując założenia wspomnianej filozofii na grunt opowieści superbohaterskich. W ten sposób wykazuje, że trop metalepsy jest fundamentem myśli twórczej Granta Morrisona.

In this paper, I analyze the work of Scottish comic book writer Grant Morrison in terms of the use of the trope of metalepsis in three comic book series from the early stage of their career: Animal Man, The Invisibles and Flex Mentallo. In the first chapter, I look at the comic book Animal Man, arguing that Morrison uses metalepsis on a large scale to outline his view on the relationship between fiction and reality and to criticize specific trends and practices in the American comic book market. In the second chapter I focus on presenting Morrison's creative philosophy that crystallizes in the pages of The Invisibles series, according to which the border between fiction and the real world is fluid and unstable. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis of the comic book Flex Mentallo focusing again on the metaleptic nature of this text and applying the assumptions of the mentioned philosophy to the field of superhero stories. In this way I demonstrate that the trope of metalepsis is the foundation of Grant Morrison's creative thought.
