Cryptocurrencies in the modern financial system

Celem pracy jest analiza i ocena kryptowalut oraz technologii blockchain. Próbuje ona rozwiązać problem dotyczący szans i zagrożeń wynikających z pojawienia się kryptowalut oraz technologii blockchain. Aby na niego odpowiedzieć zastosowano podejście systemowe ze względu na złożoność tematu. Praca została oparta na publikacjach naukowych oraz źródłach internetowych, na podstawie których oparte także było wnioskowanie. Opisano w niej infrastrukturę rejestrów rozproszonych na podstawie technologii blockchain oraz problematykę z nią związana dotyczącą standaryzacji i formalizacji. W pracy przeanalizowany został także rynek kryptowalut pod względem stopy zwrotu, struktury oraz mechanizmów na nim zachodzących. Analiza pokazała, iż rynek ten cechuje się dużo większą stopą zwrotu niż klasyczny rynek finansowy, a inwestowanie na nim wiąże się z większym ryzykiem i spekulacją. Przedstawiono przykłady zastosowania kryptowalut i technologii blockchain oraz ich wpływ na system finansowy. Pozwoliło to na ukazanie efektywności tych rozwiązań w porównaniu do obowiązujących systemów płatniczych oraz problemów, z którymi wiąże się ich wprowadzenie. Oceniono także użycie kryptowaluty jako środka płatniczego na podstawie wprowadzenia Bitcoina jako oficjalnego środka wymiany w Salwadorze. Wyniki badań ukazują ogólny obraz ekosystemu kryptowalut w sferze ekonomicznej.

The aim of this paper is to analyse and evaluate cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. It attempts to address the problem concerning the opportunities and threats arising from the emergence of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. To answer it, a systems approach has been used due to the complexity of the topic. The paper was based on scientific publications and internet sources, on which the inference was also based. It describes the infrastructure of distributed registers on the basis of blockchain technology and the related issues of standardisation and formalisation. The study also analysed the cryptocurrency market in terms of the rate of return, structure and mechanisms occurring in it. The analysis showed that this market has a much higher rate of return than the classic financial market, and investing in it involves greater risk and speculation. Examples of the use of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology and their impact on the financial system were presented. They showed much higher effectiveness in comparison with the existing payment systems, but their use was associated with certain issues. The use of cryptocurrency as a means of payment was also evaluated based on the introduction of Bitcoin as an official means of exchange in El Salvador. The findings reveal a general picture of the cryptocurrency ecosystem in the economic sphere.
