The Verbal Humour from a Pragmatic Point of View

W niniejszej pracy spróbujemy pokazać, jaką rolę odgrywa pragmatyka przy tworzeniu wypowiedzi humorystycznych. W pierwszym rozdziale opiszemy, czym jest humor słowny zgodnie z pragmatycznymi definicjami oraz przedstawimy zarówno jego mechanizmy językowe, jak i pozajęzykowe. W drugim rozdziale omówimy model Paula Grice’a, który przedstawia zasadę kooperacji między rozmówcami składającą się z czterech maksym: jakości, ilości, odniesienia i sposobu. W ostatnim rozdziale, przede wszystkim na podstawie komiksów Mafalda autorstwa Quino, pokażemy w praktyce łamanie powyższych maksym – czyli procesu, dzięki któremu wypowiedzi bohaterów osiągają efekt komiczny.

In this paper, we try to present what role the pragmatics plays in the creation of humorous statements. In the first chapter, we will describe what the verbal humour is according to the pragmatic definitions, and we will also present its linguistic as well as extralinguistic mechanisms. In the second chapter, we will comment on Paul Grice’s model which presents the cooperative principle among the speakers composed of four maxims: quality, quantity, relation and manner. In the last chapter, mainly basing on Quino’s comics Mafalda, we will present in practice the infringement of these maxims, that is the process by which the characters’ statements produce comic effect.

En este trabajo, intentaremos mostrar qué papel desempeña la pragmática en la creación de los enunciados humorísticos. En el primer capítulo, se describirá lo que es el humor verbal de acuerdo con las definiciones pragmáticas; y también, se expondrán sus mecanismos tanto lingüísticos como extralingüísticos. En el segundo capítulo, comentaremos el modelo de Paul Grice, que presenta el principio de cooperación entre los interlocutores compuesto de cuatro máximas: cualidad, cantidad, relación y manera. En el último capítulo, sobre todo a base de los tebeos Mafalda de Quino, mostraremos en práctica la infracción de dichas máximas, es decir, el proceso por el cual los enunciados de los personajes producen efecto cómico.
