Translation and characteristic of technical texts based on example of a manual

Celem przedłożonej pracy magisterskiej jest dokonanie analizy porównawczej dopuszczonych do obiegu instrukcji obsługi żelazka Tefal - Mod. FV21XX series oraz zweryfikowanie, czy zostały one napisane z zachowaniem ustalonym norm i kryteriów, o których mowa w podrozdziałach 3.3 i 3.4. Kluczową rolę spełniał przy tym komunikatywny aspekt obu tekstów. Oprócz zbadania zachowanych norm, podjęto próbę analizy tekstów lub też ich fragmentów pod kątem spełnienia funkcji komunikatywnej, instruujacej, a także w pewnej mierze apelującej. Teksty użytkowe, jak i instrukcje są tworzone według konkretnych form. Są one przy tym objęte procesem standaryzacji, co zostało udowodnione na zawartych w pracy przykładach tekstów standardowych, umieszczanych w większości instrukcji. Jak zostało udowodnione w rozdziałach 6 i 8, polska wersja analizowanego tłumaczenia instrukcji obsługi zawiera wiele błędów, co wskazuje na fakt, że przy tłumaczeniu tego tekstu używany był tylko słownik niemiecko-polski. Tekst został przetłumaczony na język polski dosłownie, bez odniesienia się przy tym do polskich i niemieckich standardów oraz do zakresu znaczeniowego użytych ekwiwalentów. Dosłowne tłumaczenie jest nie tylko mylące, ale jest również przykładem użycia tautonimów. W wielu miejscach treść tłumaczonej instrukcji nie została poprawnie oddana, a funkcje tekstu nie zostały zachowane. Jest to zauważalne w doborze odpowiedników, które częściowo lub całkowicie nie oddają znaczenia słów zawartych w oryginalnym tekście. W wyniku takiego tłumaczenia powstały sztucznie utworzone słowa lub pary słów, które nie oddają treści zawartej w oryginale i mogą stać się przyczyną błędnych działań użytkownika. W analizowanym przekładzie można zauważyć, że podczas tworzenia polskiego odpowiednika nie zostały zachowane polskie normy regulujące treść instrukcji obsługi. Teksty standardowe, które są integralną częścią większości instrukcji w języku polskim i niemieckim, powinny zostać użyte w wielu miejscach. Zapewniają one zgodność z odpowiednimi przepisami bezpieczeństwa i standardami, np. tymi, które zostały określone przez Unię Europejską. Tłumacz nie tylko nie zachował logicznej struktury tekstu, ale także naruszył jego spójność. Takie wytyczne nie powinny zostać opublikowane, ponieważ są błędne i mylące. Tłumacząc instrukcję autor przekładu jest zobowiązany do uwzględnienia zasad języka docelowego oraz do stworzenia nowego tekstu z zachowaniem treści tekstu oryginalnego. Zadziwiające jest, że tłumacz zlekceważył to zadanie i skupił się na przeniesieniu struktury tekstu w języku niemieckimna przekład w języku polskim. Zadaniem każdego tłumacza jest zmiana tekstu poprzez różne transformacje z zachowaniem odpowiednich zasad struktury tekstu w języku docelowym, dzięki czemu przedstawi treść w sposób jasny i jednoznaczny dla odbiorcy posługującego się przekładem. Polska wersja tekstu nie oferuje jasnego przedstawienia faktów i dopuszcza własne interpretacje, co w przypadku instrukcji obsługi jest niedopuszczalne. Analizowane tłumaczenie instrukcji obsługi nie powinno zostać dopuszczone do użytku publicznego, ponieważ może ono wprowadzić nabywcę produktu w błąd, narazić go na niebezpieczeństwo w trakcie użytkowania. Może również być podstawą do złożenia reklamacji.

The aim of the thesis is to make a comparative analysis of operating instructions of Tefal iron - Mod. FV21XX series, which were admitted to use and verify if they were written with the behavior of fixed standards and criteria, referred to in subsections 3.3 and 3.4. The communicative aspect fulfills a crucial role in both texts. In addition to examining extant norms, both texts or their fragments were analyzed in terms of designed to meet the communicative, instructing as well as appealing function. Useful texts and manuals are created accordingly to specific forms. They are covered by the standardization process, which has been proven on attached examples of standard texts, placed in most of the manual. Like it has been demonstrated in chapters 6 and 8, the Polish version of the analyzed translation of the manual contains many errors, which indicates that for the translation of this text only a German-Polish dictionary was used. The text was translated into Polish literally, without reference to the Polish and German standards and the scope of used semantic equivalents. The literal translation is not only confusing, but it is also an example of using the ‘false friends’. In many places the content of the translated instructions was not properly given, and the text features were not respected. It is noticeable in the selection of counterparts, which partially or completely do not reflect the meaning of words contained in the original text. As a result of such a translation some words or pairs of words were artificially created and do not reflect the content contained in the original. This can cause erroneous user actions. In the analyzed translation it can be seen that when creating a Polish counterpart Polish standards governing the content of the manual have not been respected. Standard texts, which are an integral part of most instruction in Polish and German, should be used in many places. They ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations and standards, such as those that have been specified by the European Union. The Translator left not only the logical structure of text, but also erred in its consistency. Such guidelines should not be published because they are wrong and misleading. The Translator is required to consider the principles of the target language and to create a new text while maintaining the content of the original text. It is remarkable that the translator ignored the task and focused on the transfer of text structure in the German language for translation in Polish. The task of every interpreter is to change the text through various transformations, while safeguarding the structure of the text in the target language, so that it could be presents in a clear and unambiguous way for the recipient, who uses the translation. The Polish version of the text does not offer a clear statement of the facts and allow their own interpretations, which is in the case of a manual unacceptable. The analyzed translation of operating instructions should not be admitted to public use because it can introduce the purchaser of the product in error, expose him to danger during use.
