Epithalamium - ancient wedding songs. Wedding ceremonies in ancient Greece and Rome based on epithalamium of Sappho, Theocritus and Catullus.

Głównym celem pracy, było wykazanie czy Safona, Teokryt i Katullus w swoich utworach, pisali o prawdziwych wydarzeniach i rytuałach, czy wymyślali je na potrzeby swojej poezji. W pracy opisuję fragment utworu 44 Safony, Epitalamium Heleny i Menelaosa, który napisał Teokryt oraz Carmen 61, Carmen 62 i Carmen 64 autorstwa Katullusa. Przeanalizowałam również greckie i rzymskie tradycje weselne. Na końcu pokazałam, że ich utwory są podobne do siebie pomimo tego, że wszystkie były pisane w innych wiekach i epokach.

The main aim of this work was to show if Sappho, Theocritus and Catullus in their poems, were writing about real events and rituals or were inventing them for poetry. In this work I describe fragment 44 of Sappho, The Epithalamium of Helen and Menelaus, from the Eighteenth Idyllium of Theocritus and three works of Catullus – Carmen 61, Carmen 62 and Carmen 64. I analyzed Greek and Roman wedding traditions. Finally I showed that their works are similar to each other in spite of that there were writing in other epoch.
