The Image of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Poles in the Correspondence of Peter the Great 1696-1711

Opierając się głównie na korespondencji Piotra I z lat 1696-1711, autor pracy rozpatruje osobisty stosunek cara wobec polskiej elity i państwa polsko-litewskiego. Celem pracy jest interpretacja wypowiedzi Piotra I o Polakach oraz jego zachowania wobec nich w szerokim kontekście jego języka i rosyjskiej kultury przełomu XVII i XVIII wieku. Dyplomatyczna oraz militarna historia tego okresu w takim podejściu pojmowana jest tylko jako część kontekstu. Jak wynika z przeprowadzonej analizy, Piotr nie cechował się immanentną wrogością wobec Polski i polskiej kultury, chociaż nie był wolny od tradycyjnych stereotypów. Jego wypowiedzi o Polakach miały bardzo osobisty charakter i zależały przede wszystkim od relacji z pojedynczymi osobami. Poza tym, na postępowanie i język Piotra zawsze wpływała interpretacja aktualnej sytuacji politycznej. Sposób, w jaki postrzegał i przedstawiał wydarzenia w Polsce, zawsze miał głębokie powiązania z jego własną jego własną, odmienną kulturą narodową.

Based mainly on the correspondence of Peter the Great from the years 1696-1711, the thesis investigates the Tsar’s personal attitude towards the Polish elite and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The purpose of the study is interpreting Peter’s remarks about Poles and his behaviour towards them in a wide context of his language and Russian culture of the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. In such an approach, the diplomatic and military history of that period is regarded only as a part of the context. As the study points out, Peter was not genuinely hostile to Poland and Polish culture, although he was not free from traditional stereotypes. His statements about Poles were very personal and were mostly dependent on his relations with certain individuals. Furthermore, Peter’s acting and language were greatly influenced by an interpretation of the current political situation. The way he perceived and represented events in Poland always had deep connections with his own, different national culture.
