Comic elements in the "Oresteia" of Aeschylus

The present article endeavours to investigate the presence, nature and function of certain comic elements in the Oresteia of Aeschylus. These are to be found in all three parts of the tragic trilogy, for example in the prologue of Agamemnon, where the watchman exhibits many comic traits; in the recognition scene of Choephori, where Orestes and Electra are victims of an absurd misunderstanding; also in that scene of Eumenides where the ghost of Clytemnestra attempts to waken the drunken Erinyes. Other important comic moments in the Oresteia are the entrance of the nurse in Choephori and the kommos in Eumenides, both of which are seen by scholars as being borrowings from the Old Comedy. The primary function of these comic or quasi-comic scenes would seem to be to relieve dramatic tension by means of a momentary departure from the main direction of the plot, thus greatly enhancing the impact of the sudden rise in suspense that invariably follows them.

En este artículo investigamos la presencia, el carácter y la función de algunos elementos cómicos que podemos encontrar en las tres partes de la Orestía de Esquilo: en el prólogo de Agamenón, en el que el personaje del guardia tiene unos rasgos cómicos muy característicos; en la escena del reconocimiento de Las coéforas, donde hay un gracioso malentendido entre Orestes y Electra; y en la escena de Las Euménides, el fantasma de Clitemnestra intenta despertar a las Erinias borrachas. Otros elementos cómicos en la Orestía son: la entrada de la niñera en Las coéforas, y el kommos en Las Euménides, los cuales no analizamos más profundamente porque ya están reconocidos por los filólogos como préstamos de la Comedia Vieja. Se llega a la conclusión de que la función más importante de todos estos elementos cómicos en la Orestía es, sobre todo, relajar la tensión dramática para que los espectadores puedan sentir, en un momento dado, su crecimiento con doble intensidad.
