"Beautiful and Good" : a Normative Pattern of Culture?

W myśli greckiej, począwszy od okresu homeryckiego, funkcjonował ideał kulturowy kalos kai agathos (piękny i dobry). Termin ten w pierwotnym, etymologicznym znaczeniu odnosił się do kodeksu honorowych zachowań (aristoi) starohelleńskiej szlachty; następnie się upowszechnił, jako przekonanie, że dobro i piękno nawzajem sobie towarzyszą. Artykuł analizuje różne ujęcia kalokagathii (Homer, Solon, Tyrtajos) oraz jest próbą potraktowania jej jako normatywnej definicji kultury. Stąd szczegółowa artykulacja pojęcia arete i jej odniesienia zewnętrznego - czci (time). Mimo odległości czasowej i odmiennej deskrypcji, model kalokagathii może funkcjonować współcześnie. Symboliczna reprezentacja zmienia wszak tylko swe formy, nie znaczenia.

In the Greek thought, since the Homeric times, there was widely in the Greek culture known kalos kai agathos (beautiful and good). Originally, the term referred to the code of honourable manners aristoi of the early Hellenic nobles. Then, it was spread as a common conviction that good and beautiful tend to accompany each other. The paper presents various understandings of the concept kalokagathia (Homer, Solon, Tirtaios) and considers whether it is possible to treat it as a normative definition of culture. In this context, the author undertakes the analysis of arete and its external reference - reverence (time). Moreover, the paper discuses the ways to accomplish the state of ethical prowess. Despite a great distance in time and different description, the model of kalokagathia seems to be acceptable also nowadays. The symbolic representation does change the forms, however, and not the meanings.
