The status of the synagogues in the consciousness of Poles and their contemporary functioning.

Praca poświęcona jest współczesnemu funkcjonowaniu synagog w świadomości Polaków. Ustalono, że niewielu spośród nich postrzega ją zgodnie z zasadami religii judaizmu, a mianowicie widzi w niej miejsce zgromadzeń wiernych. Większość obywateli Polski, traktuje synagogę jako miejsca święte. To właśnie takie myślenie uchroniło wiele z tych budowli przed zniszczeniem. Znacznie mniejsza grupa przenosi na nią wrogość, którą żywią do narodu żydowskiego i wyznawanej przez nich religii. Wydaje się, że dla zachowania dziedzictwa żydowskiego w Polsce oraz właściwego odbioru jego charakteru, konieczna jest rzetelna edukacja społeczeństwa. Powinna ona dotyczyć zarówno specyfiki religii żydowskiej jak i służących jej budynków.

The paper is devoted to the contemporary functioning of synagogues in the minds of Poles. It has been established that few of them perceive it in accordance with the principles of the religion of Judaism, namely, they see a place of the assembly of the faithful in it. Most Polish citizens treat synagogues as sacred places. This thinking has saved many of these buildings from destruction. Much smaller group transfers its hostility to it, which they feed on the Jewish people and religion they profess. It seems that for the preservation of Jewish heritage in Poland and the proper reception of its character, reliable education of the society is necessary. It should concern both specificity of the Jewish religion and buildings serving it.
