The doctrine of the Unification Church: a reinterpretation of Christianity or religious syncretism?

W mojej pracy poruszam problematykę jednego z koreańskich nowych ruchów religijnych, którym jest Kościół Zjednoczeniowy. Analizuję doktrynę tego ruchu w kontekście inkluzyjnej koreańskiej religijności i synkretystycznego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Kościół Zjednoczeniowy deklaruje się jako ruch wywodzący się z tradycji chrześcijańskiej. Moim celem jest znalezienie odpowiedzi na szereg pytań badawczych: Czy główne idee tego Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego są zbieżne z doktryna chrześcijańską? Jak silny jest wpływ doktryny chrześcijańskiej w myśli Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego? Czy można w myśli tego kościoła wyróżnić dominujący wpływ jednej tradycji religijnej? Jakie znaczenie mają tradycje niechrześcijańskie takie jak szamanizm, buddyzm konfucjanizm i taoizm? Czy i w jakim kierunku Ruch Zjednoczeniowy ewoluował? Czy doktrynę Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego można nazwać synkretystyczną? Czy jest to synkretyzm powierzchowny, czy głęboki? W mojej pracy wykazuję, że w doktrynie i praktykach Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego wyraźne są wpływy wielu tradycji religijnych, wśród których szczególne miejsce zajmuje szamanizm. Ponadto udowadniam, że tradycyjna myśl chrześcijańska w obrębie tego ruchu została znacznie zmodyfikowana, częstokroć całkowicie niezgodnie z myślą chrześcijańską. Dokonuję oceny doktryny Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego pod kątem głębokości synkretyzmu. W analizie doktryny, opieram się zarówno na głównej księdze Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego tzw. Boskiej Zasadzie, w której zawarte są główne koncepcje teologiczne ruchu, jak również na szeregu innych źródeł, publikacji i opracowań. We wstępie opisuję literaturę, z której korzystam i wyjaśniam czym jest Ruch Zjednoczeniowy. W kolejnych sześciu rozdziałach dokonuję analizy doktryny Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcam koreańskiemu krajobrazowi religijnemu, który jest kluczowy dla analizy doktryny Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego pod kątem przenikania się różnych tradycji religijnych. W rozdziale drugim kontynuuję ten temat, omawiając jaką formę przybrały idee protestantyzmu w Korei. Trzeci rozdział poświęcam biografii założyciela Kościoła Zjednoczeniowego – Sun Myung Moona i historii powstania tego ruchu. Czwarty rozdział jest zasadniczy dla mojej pracy, gdyż dokonuję w niej analizy głównych założeń kościoła takich jak między innymi: koncepcji Boga, człowieka, stworzenia świata, upadku, eschatologii i zbawienia. Piąty rozdział poświęcam szczególnej praktyce obecnej w Kościele Zjednoczeniowym, jakim jest kontakt ze światem duchów. W rozdziale szóstym dokonuje analizy zmian w kościele, które zaszły po śmierci jego założyciela. Pracę kończę przedstawieniem głównych wniosków wraz z próbą syntetycznej oceny tematu.

In my thesis, I discuss the phenomenon of one of the Korean new religious movements, the Unification Church. I analyze the doctrine of this movement in the context of inclusive Korean religiosity and syncretistic cultural heritage. The Unification Church declares itself as a movement derived from the Christian tradition. My goal is to find answers to several research questions: Are the main ideas of the Unification Church consistent with Christian doctrine? How strong is the influence of Christian doctrine in the thought of the Unification Church? Is it possible to distinguish one dominant influence in the thought of this church? What is the importance of non-Christian traditions such as shamanism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism? Has the Unification Movement evolved and in what direction? Can the doctrine of the Unification Church be called syncretistic? Is this syncretism superficial or deep? In my paper, I demonstrate that the doctrine and practices of the Unification Church are clearly influenced by many religious traditions, among which shamanism holds a special place. Moreover, I demonstrate that traditional Christian thought absorbed by this movement has been significantly modified, often completely inconsistent with Christian doctrine. I assess the doctrine of the Unification Church in terms of the depth of syncretism. In the analysis of the doctrine, I rely on the main book of the Unification Church, the so-called The Divine Principle, which contains the main theological concepts of the movement, as well as a number of other sources, publications and studies. In the introduction, I describe the literature I use and explain what the Unification Movement is. In the next six chapters I analyze the doctrine of the Unification Church. The first chapter is devoted to the Korean religious landscape, which is crucial for analyzing the doctrine of the Unification Church in terms of the interpenetration of various religious traditions. In chapter two, I continue this topic by discussing what form the ideas of Protestantism took in Korea. The third chapter is dedicated to the biography of the founder of the Unification Church - Sun Myung Moon and the history of this movement. Chapter four is fundamental to my work, because I analyze the main beliefs of the Unification Church, such as: the concept of God an man, the creation of the world, the fall, eschatology and salvation. The fifth chapter is devoted to a special practice present in the Unification Church, which is contact with the world of spirits. In chapter six, I analyze the changes that occurred after the death of the founder. I finish my thesis by drawing the main conclusions and presenting a synthetic assessment of the topic.
