Niewiarygodny narrator w nowelach Edgara Allana Poe: szaleństwo, podstęp i nadużywanie substancji psychoaktywnych

Niniejsza praca skupia się na niewiarygodności narratorów w wybranych nowelach Edgara Allana Poe pod kątem szaleństwa, podstępu narratora i nadużywania przez nich substancji psychoaktywnych. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera krótką biografię Edgara Allana Poe, zarys historyczny leczenia zaburzeń psychicznych w XIX wiecznych Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki i zarysu zagadnienia niewiarygodnej narracji. Dalsza część pracy skupia się na analizie czterech nowel Poe: "The Black Cat", "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado" i "William Wilson". Każde z tych dzieł zawiera w sobie wskazówki co do prawdziwego biegu wydarzeń, jak i stanu psychicznego narratora, które pozwalają ocenić jego wiarygodność.

This thesis focuses on the unreliability of the narrators in the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In it, I concentrate on approaching the narrators from the angle of insanity, deception and substance abuse which produces different results for the grounds on which the narrators can be deemed unreliable. The first chapter touches upon the general idea of unreliabe narration, as well as a brief overview of Poe's life and a short history of the treatment of insanity in 19th century United States of America. The following chapters are focused on analysing four short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Black Cat", "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado" and "William Wilson". Each of the story has various clues which allow the reader to unravel the possible interpretation of the stories. All of these stories’ narrators manifest, to a certain degree, insanity, unstability or deception which turns them into inreliable narrators.
