The Manifestation of Mononoke Entity in Kon’jaku Monogatari-shū

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie, w jaki sposób dawni Japończycy postrzegali zjawę mononoke, poprzez analizę XXVII zbioru Kon’jaku Monogatari-shū. Pierwszy rozdział podejmuje problem japońskiej demonologii, której jedną z głównych cech jest nieokreśloność. Jako że mononoke wywodzi się z tradycji sintoistycznej, analizie poddana zostaje demonologia tej właśnie religii. Kolejny rozdział ma na celu wytłumaczenie, czym jest mononoke. W pierwszej kolejności autorka opisuje semantykę słowa, kładąc nacisk na jego etymologię. Następnie tłumaczy, jaki jest związek demonów oni z mononoke oraz kiedy i w jaki sposób owe istoty zaczęły być odróżniane. Po tym znajduje się opis zjaw tsukumogami oraz madowashigami, które również mogą się jawić jako przedstawiciele mononoke. Trzeci rozdział zawiera w sobie charakterystykę gatunków literackich setsuwa i monogatari, po czym praca skupia się na opisie kontekstu społecznego oraz kulturowego powstawania Kon’jaku monogatari-shū. W dalszej kolejności opisana zostaje struktura i tematyka dzieła. W czwartym rozdziale analizie poddanych jest 9 wybranych opowiadań z XXVII zwoju antologii, w których, według autorki pracy, pojawia się zjawa mononoke oraz dlaczego jego manifestacja występuje w takiej, a nie innej formie.

The aim of this work is to show, how ancient Japanese perceived the mononoke entity, by the analysis of 27th volume of Kon’jaku monogatari-shū. The first chapter talks about the problem of japanese demonology, which main characteristic is the ambiguity. As mononoke comes from the shinto tradition, the analysis is focused on the demonology from this religion. The next chapter explains, what exactly is mononoke. First, the author describes the semantics of the word by putting an emphasis on the etymology. Next, there is an explanation about the connection between the demon oni and mononoke, including how and when both of the entities were starting to be perceived separately. This is followed by a description of two beings called tsukumogami and madowashigami, which might also be ones of the mononoke kind. The third chapter includes a characterisation of setsuwa and monogatari genre, which is followed by a description of the cultural and social context of the creation of Kon’jaku monogatari-shū. Then, there is a description of the structure and the topic of this literary piece. The fourth chapter analyses 9 tales chosen from the 27th volume of the anthology, in which, according to the thesis’s author, the mononoke entity appears, and why it is manifesting the way that is described in the stories.
