From words to action. Violeta Parra's work for promotion of folklore and her music and poetic compositions in the light of Assmann's memory studies

Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza działalności na rzecz promocji folkloru oraz twórczości muzyczno-poetyckiej chilijskiej artystki Violety Parry, żyjącej w latach 1917-1967, pod kątem koncepcji pamięciowych autorstwa niemieckiego egiptologa i teoretyka studiów nad pamięcią Jana Assmanna (1938), rozwijanych także przez jego żonę Aleidę Assmann (1947). Pierwszy rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie do tematyki memory studies. Nakreśla się w nim etapy i główne kierunki rozwoju tego interdyscyplinarnego pola badań z uwzględnieniem najnowszych tendencji, które wykorzystują teksty kultury jako źródło refleksji nad kwestią pamięci. Kontynuując, w drugim rozdziale znajduje się szczegółowe omówienie koncepcji pamięciowych autorstwa Assmannów, służących w niniejszym badaniu jako narzędzie metodologiczne, takich jak: pamięć komunikacyjna i kulturowa, dryfująca luka (floating gap) oraz pamięć funkcjonalna i magazynująca. Rozdział trzeci to próba przeniesienia Assmannowskich terminów w kontekst strategii obranej przez Violetę Parrę na rzecz promocji chilijskiego folkloru, obejmującej zarówno jej interpretacje utworów ludowych, jak i jej własne kompozycje muzyczne i poetyckie, a także rozmaite inne działania o charakterze popularyzatorskim. Na zakończenie, w czwartym rozdziale proponuje się refleksję na temat tego, czy pamięć o tragicznie zmarłej chilijskiej artystce jest obecnie kultywowana i czy sama Violeta Parra stała się obiektem dyskursu pamięciowego.

This study aims to analyze the work for promotion of folklore and music and poetic compositions of Chilean artist Violeta Parra (1917-1967) in the light of Jan Assmann’s memory studies, which are also developed by his wife, Aleida Assmann.The first chapter provides a short introduction to the area of memory studies, presenting its brief history and main concepts of this interdisciplinary field of research with an emphasis on its latest trends which are focused on the interpretation of cultural texts as a valuable source in the context of the memory studies. The second chapter approaches the specific notions of the memory studies, coined by German Egyptologist Jan Assmann (1938) and his wife Aleida Assmann (1947), which will be used as methodological tools in this study: cultural and communicative memory, floating gap, as well as, functional and storage memory.The third part offers an analysis of Violeta Parra’s strategy for popularization of Chilean folklore, including her interpretations of popular compositions, her own music and poetic pieces and other actions, in the light of Assmann’s theory, presented in the previous chapter. The last part investigates an issue of the nowadays remembrance of the figure of Violeta Parra and her possible perception as a part of memory discourse.
