D-shaped structures in Mesa Verde Central Region, Colorado (USA)

Na stanowiskach okresu Pueblo III w Regionie Centralnym Mesa Verde wśród wielu obiektów mieszkalnych i ceremonialnych, znajdują się założenia o wyjątkowym planie litery D. Niniejsza praca porusza aspekty związane z architekturą Regionu Centralnego Mesa Verde, a dokładniej elementem architektury publicznej, jakim są budynki D-kształtne występujące na stanowiskach kultury Pueblo w XIII wieku. Czas ten jest okresem apogeum rozwoju kultury Pueblo w regionie, znajdującym się na pograniczu dzisiejszych stanów Arizona, Utah, Colorado i Nowy Meksyk. Celem pracy było wykonanie zestawienia stanowisk zawierających D-kształtne budowle, analiza i opis założeń D-kształtnych występujących w tym czasie na tym terenie.Budynki D-kształtne to budowle występujące na stanowiskach Kultury Pueblo w okresie Pueblo III – od ok. połowy XII wieku niemal do końca wieku XIII, gdy następuje wyludnienie regionu. Region Mesa Verde znany jest z osad klifowych (np. Cliff Palace, Spruce Tree House), które wpisują się w schemat osadniczy jaki miał miejsce w tym czasie. Mieszkańcy regionu przenosili swoje osady z płaskowyżów w trudniej dostępne nisze skalne lub na krawędzie kanionów. Większe osady występowały jako centra osadnicze skupiające wokół siebie mniejsze jednostki. Centra osadnicze składały się często z setek pomieszczeń, wśród których można wyróżnić dziś założenia ceremonialne, mieszkalne i magazynowe. Wszystkie te budowle występowały w dużej ilości. Wyjątkiem były budynki D-kształtne pojawiające się najczęściej tylko raz na stanowisku.Rozdział pierwszy to ogólny zarys regionu, opis kultury Pueblo, chronologia oraz przybliżenie najważniejszych cech i aspektów kultury Pueblo na terenie Regionu Centralnego Mesa Verde. Dotychczasowe teorie na temat D-kształtnych budynków przedstawia rozdział II, którego dalsza część stanowi zestawienie stanowisk z regionu zawierających omawiany typ budynków. Kolejne podrozdziały to opis 10 stanowisk z D-kształtnymi budynkami. Rozdział trzeci stanowi krótki opis Kultury Pueblo z Regionu Chaco, gdzie kształt litery D również z punktu widzenia architektury jest istotny. Dalsza część rozdziału to poszukiwanie są cech wspólnych i wykazywanie różnic pomiędzy D-kształtnymi założeniami z tych dwóch okresów.

Archaeological sites of the Pueblo III period in the Mesa Verde Central Region contains many residential and ceremonial buildings. Among them, there are also exceptional ones – D-shaped structures.This dissertation addresses aspects related to the architecture of the Mesa Verde Central Region, more specifically to the element of public architecture, which are the D-shaped buildings at the sites of the Pueblo culture during the 13th century – the time of the apex of the development of the Pueblo culture in the region located on the border of today's Four Corner Region at the borders of states: Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.The aim of the work was to prepare a list of sites containing D-shaped structures, analysis and description of D-shaped assumptions occurring at that time in this area.D-shaped buildings are present at the villages of the Pueblo Culture in the Pueblo III period (since the middle of the 12th century to almost the end of the 13th century, when the region becomes depopulated). The Mesa Verde region is known for its cliff dwellings (e.g. Cliff Palace, Spruce Tree House), which are characteristic of the settlement pattern at that time. The inhabitants of the region moved their settlements from the plateaus to less accessible places in the ledges of rock cliffs or to the edges of canyons. Bigger settlements acted as community centers gathering smaller units around each other. Community centers often consisted of hundreds of rooms, among which today we can distinguish ceremonial, residential and warehouse premises. All these buildings were found in large numbers. The exception was the D-shaped buildings that appeared most often only once on the site.The first chapter is an overall overview of the region, a description of the Pueblo culture, chronology and an introduction to the most important features of the Pueblo culture in the Mesa Verde Central Region. In Chapter II are presented existing theories about D-shaped buildings, the next part is a list of sites from the region containing the D-shaped structures. The following subsections describe 10 sites with D-shaped buildings. The third chapter is a brief description of the Pueblo Culture from the Chaco Region, where the D-shape is also important from the architectural point of view. The rest of the chapter looks for common features and shows the differences between the D-shaped assumptions of the two periods.
