EWOLUCJA POSTACI SHERLOCKA HOLMESA W ADAPTACJACH FILMOWYCH I TELEWIZYJNYCH

Sherlock Holmes, niezapomniany bohater legendarnych opowieści Sir Arthura Conan Doyle’a, jest jedną z najsłynniejszych postaci w historii literatury. Przygody detektywa cieszą się niesłabnącą popularnością w XXI wieku, inspirując filmowców do tworzenia nowych produkcji z mistrzem dedukcji w roli głównej. Rosnąca liczba i popularność filmowych i telewizyjnych przygód Holmesa oraz innowacyjne metody produkcji używane przez współczesnych twórców w procesie adaptacji dzieła wzbudzają zainteresowanie krytyków filmowych i badaczy literatury oraz inicjują dyskusje na temat zachowania wierności oryginałowi lub też dowolnej jego interpretacji. Celem mojej pracy jest analiza wybranych adaptacji opowiadań Doyle’a (począwszy od filmu pt. Przygody Sherlocka Holmesa z Basilem Rathbone’m w roli tytułowej a skończywszy na najnowszej produkcji¬ - brytyjskim serialu Sherlock (2010)) oraz ukazanie w jaki sposób wizerunek detektywa z odległego XIX wieku kształtował się wraz z nowymi kulturowymi trendami. Do podstawowych elementów omawianych w części analitycznej należą wygląd, charakter, legendarne atrybuty i seksualność głównego bohatera oraz rola kobiet w poszczególnych adaptacjach. Kolejne kwestie poruszone w mojej pracy dotyczą efektów wizualnych zastosowanych przez filmowców, sposobu adaptacji Sherlocka w zdigitalizowanym świecie, zjawiska fandomu oraz opowieści transmedialnej.

Sherlock Holmes, the unforgettable hero of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories, is one of the most iconic characters in the history of literature. The adventures of “the only unofficial consulting detective” continue to enjoy unabated popularity in the 21st century and inspire filmmakers to create new productions featuring the unmatched master of deduction. The enormous proliferation of onscreen adaptations of Doyle’s writings along with the innovative methods the modern creators apply to translate the written word onto the screen attract considerable scholarly attention and initiate debates over fidelity to the word or to the “spirit” of the literary work. This dissertation analyses how the Victorian hero has evolved with changing times and cultural trends in the selected adaptations of Doyle’s canon, beginning with the film The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939) with Basil Rathbone in a titular role and ending with the most recent production – the BBC Sherlock (2010-). The core elements scrutinized in the analytical sections are appearance, attributes, behaviour, relationships and sexuality of the main character as well as the role of women in the selected films and series. Further considerations regard the adaptation of Sherlock in a digitalized world, the visual strategies in filmmaking, the phenomenon of Sherlock’s fandom and the process of transmedia storytelling.
