Bohaterowie powieści reprezentują różne grupy społeczne i środowiska, które niewątpliwie wpływają na to, jak postrzegają pieniądze. Poglądy te zmieniają się na przestrzeni powieści, a Eliot wykorzystuje to jako sposób oceny postaci i ich działań. Postawy te wzmacniają realizm Eliot obecny w powieści. This thesis aims to analyze the attitudes towards money and material goods of the characters in George Eliot’s Middlemarch. The characters of the novel represent various social ranks and backgrounds, which undoubtedly affects the way they regard money. The views change throughout the course of the novel and Eliot uses this as a way to judge her characters and their actions. These attitudes enhance Eliot’s realism present in the novel. The first chapter establishes both the historical context surrounding the novel and presents Mary Ann Evans’ biography. The second chapter is devoted to the middle class characters of the novel. They are introduced with their incomes and their attitudes towards money. Through the course of analysis, it is revealed how their attitudes change, if at all. For example, because of a lack of proper income, characters like Featherstone or Lydgate gamble in order to earn more money. At the same time, Bulstrode is shunned by the community for the way in which he has acquired his wealth. The third chapter discusses the characters of the landed gentry, who have wealth and are criticized for how they utilize it. Characters like Sir James or Mr. Brooke, who are landowners, should be using their wealth to improve the lives of their tenants, but, as in Mr. Brooke’s case, fail to do so.
