The aim of the work was to examine how ambiguity affects the evaluation of advertising by product memory and the password. In the theoretical part of the instrument, I am defining advertising as a particular form of communication market. In the following chapters I focused on the presentation of the ambiguity which is a ubiquitous phenomenon in language. In a recent study by myself I wanted to check whether the use of ambiguity in messages addressed to students of The Jagiellonian University fosters the empowerment of such features of linguistic layers of media as attractiveness and ease of memorization of the advertised product and password. For this purpose I created an experiment by four invented selected goods, namely: "Housing Estate", "city of Gdańsk", "baking powder" and "Liquid dish-washing". Each of the above mentioned ads has been featured in two facets: unique and wild. In commercials with an explicit meaning the slogan referred directly to the poster image. In ambiguous commercials the visual context pointed to the second not literal meaning of the message, not related with the content of the advertisement. In the first stage the subjects were shown some advertisements. Each of the four groups surveyed was presented at once two clear ads or two ambiguous ads. Each group received a different set of ads, so that people could see the advertising of the products only in one context (wild or literal). Then, respondents ranked on a scale 1-5 the attractiveness of the presented ads (in which 1 meant that they did not enjoy it in general, and 5 - that they are really enjoyed the ad). The second part of the study was to check whether students remembered the products and advertising slogans, which were presented to them 7 days in advance. The study showed main memory item effect in three of the four presented ads. It turns out that subjects memorize the advertised product better than the presented slogan. Types of media was not influenced by this relationship in a clear way. In the case of advertising "dishwashing Fluid" and "city of Gdańsk" the significant interactive effect of the kind of media turned out to be significant. Advertising with visual context diminished the difference between remembering the product and remembering the advertising slogan. The interesting fact is also the effect of gender which affected the case of advertising "baking powder. In the case of the unique media women showed equally good memorization of both product and slogan. In the case of the ambiguous media however, the product was better remembered. In men, advertising, with a unique visual context, showed no significant difference between remembering passwords advertising and product. In the case of ambiguous media, the slogan was remembered much better than the product itself. Considering how the subjects evaluated the ad depending on the type of media, one can not conclusively determine that any of them affects the higher evaluation of advertisement. The above considerations and results, that I carried out personally, show the complexity of the phenomenon which is advertising.
