Muslims in the Netherlands: a critical study on Dutch multiculturalism

The genesis, evolution and contemporary decline of Dutch multiculturalism constitute the main axis of this thesis, presented through the changes in social and political discourse towards Muslims in the Netherlands. It firstly explains the roots of multicultural paradigm and factors considered by Dutch political elites while its implementation. The discussion continues with a brief review of different migration flows from Muslim countries into the Netherlands and simultaneously the redefinition of immigrants’ place and their role in the Dutch society is being described in order to show the progressive transition in political approach to immigrants. The profound analysis of conflict of values between Islam and liberalism in the Dutch context introduces the new phenomenon in Dutch politics and among Dutch public: rapidly increasing and overwhelming anti-Muslim sentiment. It leads not only to the radical shift of paradigm but also to deep clash of Dutch cultural identity, from which Muslims are being discursively excluded. The current social polarization appears to be one of the negative consequences of multiculturalism, strongly criticized by the author for its wrong theoretical assumptions. It is proved that its disrespect towards requirements regarding cultural integration of immigrants has resulted in consolidation and reification of intergroup boundaries and has caused antagonisms and social exclusion of minority groups instead of social cohesion.

Oś pracy stanowi przedstawienie genezy, ewolucji i mającego współcześnie miejsce zmierzchu holenderskiej doktryny multikulturalizmu na podstawie analizy przemian społeczno-politycznego dyskursu na temat muzułmanów w Holandii. Punktem wyjścia jest ukazanie korzeni i wyjaśnienie przyczyn obrania tego modelu inkorporacji imigrantów przez holenderskie elity polityczne. Dalej następuje opisanie etapów napływu muzułmańskich imigrantów do Holandii oraz paralelne omówienie postępującej redefinicji ich miejsca i roli w społeczeństwie, ilustrującej przemiany polityki w podejściu do imigrantów. Dogłębnie zanalizowany – w kontekście holenderskim – konflikt wartości między islamem a liberalizmem objaśnia pojawienie się i gwałtowny wzrost nastrojów antyislamskich zarówno na arenie politycznej, jak i w holenderskim społeczeństwie. Skutkuje on nie tylko radykalną zmianą paradygmatu, ale także narastaniem sporu o holenderską tożsamość kulturową, z której muzułmanie zostają dyskursywnie wykluczeni. Bieżąca społeczna polaryzacja przedstawiona jest jako jedna z negatywnych konsekwencji multikulturalizmu, ostro krytykowanego przez autorkę za błędne założenia teoretyczne. Praca dowodzi, że propagowane przez tę doktrynę lekceważenie wymogu kulturowej integracji imigrantów zamiast społecznej spójności doprowadziło do utrwalenia i reifikacji międzygrupowych barier, których następstwem są antagonizmy i społeczne wykluczenie grup mniejszościowych.
