"Far, far away..."- Film adaptations of fairy tales in contemporary cinema

Pod koniec XIX wieku pojawiła się nowa odmiana baśni – baśń filmowa. Pionierzy kina, poszukując interesujących tematów do swoich „ruchomych obrazów” odwołali się do twórczości Charlesa Perrault oraz braci Wilhelma i Jakoba Grimm. Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest właśnie baśni filmowej, która przeżywa obecnie prawdziwy renesans. Przedmiotem moich rozważań będą adaptacje słynnych baśni pochodzących ze zbioru opowieści i bajek Charlesa Perrault, zatytułowanego Bajki Babci Gąski (Contes de ma mère l’Oye) oraz ze zbioru niemieckich przekazów ludowych Baśnie dla dzieci i dla domu (Kinder- und Hausmärchen) autorstwa braci Grimm.W prezentowanym tekście zostanie zastosowana metoda komparatystyczna. Na pierwszym etapie scharakteryzuję zjawisko baśni filmowej w aspekcie historycznym; potem przeprowadzę analizę i interpretację wybranych filmów. Następnie sformułuję wnioski i dokonam syntezy.Zasadnicza część pracy jest złożona z trzech rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia krótki zarys historii adaptacji baśni filmowych, poczynając od pierwszych krótkich filmów prekursorów kinematografii do roku 1994 i premiery disnejowskiej animacji zatytułowanej Król Lew. reż. Roba Minkoffa i Rogera Allersa. Prześledzę także ewolucję baśni filmowej od „prostej formy” ku baśni synkretycznej.W rozdziale drugim zostaną omówione wybrane nurty baśniowe z przełomu XX i XXI wieku. Zdaniem znawców przedmiotu można mówić o drugiej fali baśni. W dalszej części rozdziału zostaną zaprezentowane reinterpretacje Czerwonego Kapturka i Królewny Śnieżki braci Grimm. W rozdziale trzecim znajdzie się analiza i interpretacja wybranych aspektów wzorcowej baśni postmodernistycznej zrealizowanej w technice CGI (computer-generated imagery), zatytułowanej Shrek. W związku z charakterem poniższej pracy w tekście pojawiły się pojęcia, które stosuję zamiennie. Do nich należą te, które określają przekaz ludowy: baśń, bajka magiczna/ czarodziejska, opowieść heroiczna czy narracja tradycyjna.

Towards the end of the 19th century appeared a new variant of a fairy tale – a fairy tale film adaptation. The pioneers of the cinema being constantly in search of new themes for their moving pictures invoked the works of Charles Perrault and the Grimm brothers. This paper discusses this new genre – a film fairy tale, which is truly flourishing at present. It analyzes film adaptations of some well-known fairy tales written by Charles Perrault and published in a collection entitled Tales of Mother Goose (Les Contes de ma Mère l’Oye) and the Grimm brothers - a collection of Children’s and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen). This paper uses a comparative method and at the beginning it characterizes the phenomenon of a film fairy tale in a historical perspective. Then a few film adaptations are analyzed and interpreted, and finally some conclusions and synthesis are presented. The main part of the paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter outlines a short history of fairy tales’ film adaptations, starting with the first short films of the cinema pioneers, until the 1994 premiere of Disney’s animated epic The Lion King (directed by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers). It also traces the evolution of a fairy tale film adaptation from this of a “simple form” towards a syncretic one.The second chapter discusses a few fairy tale currents from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The experts call this general trend a “fairy tale revival”. Then it presents some reinterpretations of the Grimm brothers’ Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White.In the third chapter there is an analysis and interpretation of some aspects of Shrek - a model postmodern fairy tale created in CGI (computer-generated imagery).This paper uses the following terms referring to the folktale tradition interchangeably: a fairy tale, a fable, a tale of magic, a heroic epic, traditional narrative.
