Retranslating Baudelaire's Poetry: Marcin Ciura and his "Flowers of Evil"

Pojawianie się nowych przekładów jest częstym zjawiskiem w sferze tłumaczeń, w szczególności jeśli chodzi o przekłady poezji. Dotyczy to m.in twórczości Charlesa Baudelaire'a, która zajmuje ukonstytuowaną pozycję w kanonie literackim w Polsce. Pierwsza część niniejszej pracy ma na celu określenie wyzwań, które pociąga za sobą ponowny przekład oraz znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie o cechy, jakie powinny charakteryzować tłumacza poezji. W części głównej zostanie przedstawiona sylwetka jednego z tłumaczy poezji Baudelaire'a, Marcina Ciury, dopełniona analizą jego projektu tłumaczeniowego. Następnie efekty jego pracy zostaną porównane z przekładami innych polskich tłumaczy Baudelaire'a. Analiza porównawcza obejmie przekłady 3 wierszy: "Hymnu do Piękna", "Do przechodzącej" i "Albatrosa". W analizie zostaną wykorzystane tendencje deformacyjne zaproponowane przez Antoine'a Bermana i figury przekładu zdefiniowane przez Jerzego Brzozowskiego.

Retranslation, especially poetic, is a very frequent phenomenon in the world of translation. This concerns, among others, the work of Charles Baudelaire that has truly marked its position in the literary canon in Poland. The first part of the present study aims at identifying the challenges of poetic retranslation as well as answering the questions about the indispensable traits of a translator of poetry. We will present the portrait of Marcin Ciura, one of the Polish translators of the "Flowers of Evil" in order to analyse his translation project and to compare the effect of his work with that of other Polish translators of Baudelairean poetry. We will analyse Baudelaire's three poems: "Hymn to Beauty", "To a Passerby" and "The Albatross". For this purpose we will use the concept of deforming tendencies proposed by Antoine Berman and the figures of translation defined by Jerzy Brzozowski.

La retraduction est un phénomène très fréquent dans le monde traductif et surtout la retraduction poétique. Cela concerne entre autres l'oeuvre de Charles Baudelaire qui a véritablement marqué sa position dans le canon littéraire en Pologne. La première partie de la présente étude se propose de déterminer les enjeux de la retraduction poétique ainsi que de répondre à la question de savoir quels sont les traits indispensables chez un traducteur de la poésie. Nous présenterons le portrait de l'un des traducteurs polonais des " Fleurs du Mal", Marcin Ciura pour analyser son projet traductif et de comparer les effets de son travail avec ceux d'autres traducteurs polonais de la poésie baudelairienne. La partie analytique comportera une comparaison des traductions des 3 poèmes de Baudelaire : "Hymne à la Beauté", "A une passante" et "L'Albatros". Dans ce but nous nous servirons du répertoire de tendances déformantes proposé par Antoine Berman ainsi que des figures de la traduction définies par Jerzy Brzozowski.
