The Gaussian integers and the moat problem

Tematem pracy są zagadnienia dotyczące liczb Gaussa oraz problemu fosy, który odnosi się do ich interpretacji geometrycznej. W pierwszej części pracy przypomniano podstawowe wiadomości z zakresu algebry abstrakcyjnej. W drugim rozdziale omówione zostały twierdzenia i definicje odnoszące się do pierścienia liczb Gaussa ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem własności jego elementów pierwszych. Są one później wykorzystane w dowodzie twierdzenia Fermata o sumach dwóch kwadratów liczb całkowitych. W ostatniej części pracy wprowadzony został problem fosy dotyczący rozmieszczenia liczb Gaussa na płaszczyźnie zespolonej wraz z aktualnymi wynikami badań różnych autorów zajmujących się tą tematyką.

The topic of this thesis is issues regarding Gaussian numbers and the Gaussian moat problem which refers to their geometric interpretation. In the first part of this paper, basic information on abstract algebra was recalled. The second chapter discusses theorems and definitions related to the ring of Gaussian integers with particular emphasis on the properties of its prime elements. These properties are later used in proof of Fermat's theorem on sums of two squares. The last part of the thesis introduces a moat problem concerning the distribution of Gaussian numbers on the complex plane and also some recent research of mathematicians dealing with this topic.
