Literature and politics : the reception of Bertolt Brecht's in Poland in the years 1948-1953

The reception of the literary output of an author politically engaged like Bertolt Brecht depends on a specific political situation. Despite the fact that in postwar Poland Brecht was one of the German writers whose works were published at the earliest, as early as 1948 and 1949, the Polish audience had to wait much longer for the first theatrical staging of his works. The obstacle was the cultural policy of those times. The performances of the Berliner Ensemble in 1952 led to an increase in the popularity of Brecht’s works in Poland, but also to the tightening of cultural policy by the Polish communist authorities. The political arrangement between Poland and the GDR contributed significantly to this. This article discusses the first phase of the reception of Bertolt Brecht’s works in Poland in1948‒1953.

Die Rezeption des literarischen Schaffens eines wie Bertolt Brecht politisch engagierten Autors hängt von einer bestimmten politischen Situation ab. Obwohl Brecht einer der deutschen Schriftsteller der Nachkriegszeit war, deren Werke am frühesten – in den Jahren 1948 und 1949 in Polen veröffentlicht wurden, musste das polnische Publikum viel länger auf die erste Theaterinszenierung seiner Werke warten. Die damalige Kulturpolitik war ein Hindernis. Die Aufführungen des Berliner Ensembles im Jahr 1952 führten zum Anstieg der Popularität von Brechts Werken in Polen, aber auch zu einer Verschärfung der Kulturpolitik durch die polnischen kommunistischen Behörden. Die politische Vereinbarung zwischen der VRP und der DDR hat hierzu einen wesentlichen Beitrag geleistet. Dieser Artikel beschreibt die erste Phase der Rezeption von Bertolt Brechts Werken in Polen in den Jahren 1948‒1953.
