Polychromy in ancient Greek sculpture and architecture

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest zagadnienie polichromii w rzeźbie, płaskorzeźbie i architekturze starożytnej Grecji. Pierwsza część pracy zawiera rozdziały stanowiące wprowadzenie do tej tematyki: krótki zarys historii badań nad starożytną polichromią, najważniejsze barwniki stosowane w starożytności i rodzaje technik malarskich; poruszona jest również kwestia postrzegania barw przez ludzi antyku. W drugiej, głównej część pracy zostały omówione najważniejsze przykłady rekonstrukcji starożytnych polichromii. W przypadku rzeźby pełnej, przyczółkowej, stel grobowych czy sarkofagów począwszy od okresu archaicznego, po klasyczny, na hellenistycznym kończąc, obserwujemy wyraźną zmianę stylu i upodobań artystycznych. Współczesne rekonstrukcje wykonane dzięki zastosowaniu wielu nowoczesnych metod pozwoliły na dokładne zidentyfikowanie składu farb, dzięki czemu możliwe jest odtworzenie nawet najbardziej skomplikowanych detali ubrań, ornamentów i biżuterii. Zagadnienie polichromii w architekturze zostało omówione na przykładzie dekoracji terakotowych elementów architektonicznych takich jak: antefiksy, akroteriony, najstarsze terakotowe metopy czy dachówki, a także kamiennych jak np. fryz ciągły i tryglifowo-metopowy Partenonu

The subject of this dissertation, is a question of polychromy in ancient Greek sculpture, relief and architecture. The first part of this diploma thesis contains chapters with introduction into this topic: a brief outline of the history of research of ancient polychromy, the most important pigments that were being used in antiquity and basic painting techniques. Furthermore, this part brings a matter of perceiving the colours by ancient people. The second, and main, part of the work presents the most important examples of reconstruction of ancient polychromy. When we take into consideration free standing sculpture, pediment sculpture, grave stelae or sarcophagus from archaic period through Classicism to Hellenistic period we can observe obvious changes in style and artistic patterns. Reconstructions performed nowadays are being made with many different methods and lead to very accurate identification of composition of dyes and reconstruct the most complicated details of clothes, ornaments and jewelry. Problem of polychromy in architecture is illustrated with examples from decorative terracottas architectural elements such as: antefixes, acroterions, the oldest preserved terracottas metopes and roof tiles as well stone narrative friezes and trygliphs and metopes friezies.
