Selected aspects of functioning youth from the Otaku subculture in Poland

Japoński termin "Otaku"w dosłownym znaczeniu oznacza "szanowny mój dom". W dobry sposób odzwierciedla tendencje młodzieży do kreowania własnej przestrzeni, w której mogą czuć się bezpiecznie. Część polskiej młodzieży wybrała przynależność do subkultury Otaku. Mimo, że nie zawsze tak określana, grupa ta zaczęła swoją działalność w Polsce w latach 80tych i funkcjonuje do dziś. Celem prezentowanej pracy jest poznanie i przedstawienie polskiej subkultury Otaku pod kątem jej funkcjonowania, wsparcia społecznego otrzymywanego w obrębie grupy oraz deklarowanych przez nią wartości. Przebadano młodzież biorącą udział w konwencie Magnificon EXPO 2018. Na podstawie uzyskanych danych można stwierdzić, że w obrębie polskiej subkultury Otaku funkcjonują głównie adolescenci, którzy wybrali tą grupę po oglądnięciu anime poleconego im przez bliską osobę. Do głównych cech grupy należy otwartość wobec innych wraz z zainteresowaniem wytworami popkultury japońskiej, choć jako wadę w obrębie samej grupy wskazywali brak tolerancji co do swoich preferencji. Mimo to grupa zapewnia im wysokie wsparcie społeczne, głównie emocjonalne. Badani w większości doświadczyli negatywnego nastawienia ze strony osób spoza subkultury. Hierarchia wartości grupy nie różni się znacząco od ogólnie cenionych wartości w Polsce.

The Japanese term "Otaku" literally meaning means "my dear home". It reflects well the tendencies of young people to create their own space in which they can feel safe. Some Polish youth chose to belong to the Otaku subculture. Although not always so called, this group began its activity in Poland in the 80s and functions to current day. The goal of this paper is to get to know and present the Polish Otaku subculture in terms of functioning within it, social support received within the group and the values declared by it. Young people taking part in the Magnificon EXPO 2018 convention were examined. Based on obtained data it can be stated that within the Polish Otaku subculture there are mainly adolescents who chose this group after watching anime recomended by a friend. The group's main features are openness to others along with the interest of Japanese pop culture, although as a disadvantage, within the group itself, they indicated lack of tolerance as to their preferences. Nevertheless, the group provides them with high social support, mainly emotional. The respondents mostly experienced a negative attitude from people outside this subculture. The hierarchy of group values is not significantly different from the generally valued values in Poland.
