Separatism of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Origin, Course and Consequences of Georgia- Russia War of August 2008

The thesis is an attempt to trace the history of the ongoing conflicts around Abkhazia and South Ossetia, with particular emphasis on the events of the last of the Caucasian wars, which took place in August 2008 and an attempt to determine the nature of these two Transcaucasian conflicts. It covers the period starting from the earliest times to the year 2010. It presents a very rich and interesting history of Abkhazia and Ossetia, focusing on the most contentious moments in the history of the two republics and describes the Russia – Georgia relations. The fall of the Soviet Union led to an escalation of both conflicts, which, though subsequently entered into the sleep phase, after which revived with new force in August 2008. Published to date documents enable presenting a reconstruction of the course of the war and the consequences of the so-called five-day war.

Niniejsza praca magisterska jest próbą prześledzenia historii konfliktów toczących się wokół Abchazji i Osetii, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wydarzeń ostatniej z kaukaskich wojen, jaka rozegrała się w sierpniu 2008 roku celem określenia charakteru owych dwóch zakaukaskich konfliktów. Obejmuje ona okres począwszy od czasów najdawniejszych aż po rok 2010. Prezentuje niezwykle bogatą i interesującą historię Abchazji i Osetii, akcentując najbardziej sporne momenty w historii obu republik, oraz opisuje relacje rosyjsko – gruzińskie. Upadek ZSRR doprowadził do eskalacji obu konfliktów, które choć następnie wprowadzone w fazę uśpienia odżyły z nową siłą w sierpniu 2008 roku. Opublikowane do tej pory dokumenty pozwalają na rekonstrukcję przebiegu działań wojennych i ocenę konsekwencji tzw. wojny pięciodniowej.
