Geometry and Nature. Fractals as a way of arranging the world around us.

Praca pochyla się nad problemem postrzegania świata przyrody przez człowieka. Biorąc za przykład fraktale, stara się opisać jak geometria, matematyka a w konsekwencji kultura zapośredniczają widzenie natury. Materiał badawczy stanowią fraktalne obrazy - dzieła grafiki komputerowej dostępne w internetowej galerii - Deviantart. Imitują one elementy przyrody będąc u swojej genezy ciągiem cyfr. Aby zinterpretować interesujące mnie obrazy amplifikuję do nich inne wytwory symboliczne, takie jak malarstwo, film czy literatura.Aby trzymać pełny obraz fraktalnego świata, praca jest podzielona na trzy części ze względu na skalę patrzenia. Pierwsza część dotyczy elementów najmniejszych i pierwotnych, druga widocznych gołym okiem, trzecia pochyla się nad większą całością - krajobrazem.Moim celem jest z jednej strony zbadanie, jaka wizja przyrody kryje się za teorią fraktali i praktyką ich tworzenia, oraz jak ma się ona w ogóle do ludzkiej wizji natury. Zasadniczym pytaniem jest, jak fraktale porządkują i nadają sens percepcji przyrody i gdzie znajdują się w szerszym spektrum sposobów rozumienia otaczającego nas świata.

The following work focuses on the problem of human perception of nature. Taking fractals as an example it tries to grasp how geometry, mathematics and, in the end, culture mediates our view of nature. My fieldwork are fractal pictures - digital artworks from international art website - Deviantart. They imitate parts of nature by being essentially sequence of numbers. To interpret these pictures I will amplify other symbols to them, such as painting, film or literature.In order to get full spectrum of fractal world my work is divided into three parts depending on the scale of the problem. Firstly it concerns the smallest and the most primal elements of matter, secondly it focuses on those elements which can be seen by bare eye, thirdly it looks at bigger totalities - landscapes.My goal is to examine what image of nature lies behind the theory and practice of fractals. Secondly how it correspond with the more general vision of nature. The most important question is: how fractals arrange our perception of nature and where their view could be found in the whole map of human understanding of the world?
